Getting a Mare to Accept Foal or Foal to Drink from Bucket

Something similar happened a while back. The vet gave the mare some sort of calmative/sedative/pain reliever which would not affect the foal. It calmed her enough that she did not fret and it only took two doses for her to let the foal stay and nurse her. Sorry, can't remember if it was a...

    New Thread...Black-As-Knight

Does anyone know which guidelines are used by AMHA for drug testing? Are they the USEF guidelines? If so, these are the Forbidden Substances- USEF FORBIDDEN SUBSTANCES http://www.usef.org/documents/drugsMeds/US...onsPamphlet.pdf acepromazine acetophenazine acetylpromazine albuterol...

    Horses' tails stolen!

In December there was a case of a farm where all the white horse tails were cut in a pasture, but no other color was cut. They found out later that a grandpa was hand carving rocking horses for some grandchildren. He asked a teenage grandson to help him find some horsehair for mane and tails on...

    Dressing for Country Pleasure Driving?

I've watched at R shows and A shows. There is a huge array of what is worn. If you are around long enough, you'll see just about everything. I believe there is a difference in evening classes and daytime classes about how "formal" you want to get. That being said, I've seen lots of sequined and...

    orphan foal

Can use a regular baby bottle nipple or a goat nipple. Sometimes the "fake mare's milk" doesn't taste right to them. Our vet thinks there are a lot of chemicals that are additives unless it is real powdered mares milk. Read the label. Sometimes the ingredients are like a chemistry set. He...

Someone please help, I'm at my wits end!

Big horses often have major behavior problems when they are dealing with an ulcer. I've seen a horse buck off a saddle and act crazy. It turned out he had an ulcer. I've seen a well trained dressage horse all of a sudden go nuts because of an ulcer. I guess they hurt so bad, they don't know what...

    AMHR Journal, Feb./March issue

Ya know, when I started to read this thread, I thought it was going to be about the AMHR journal. Instead, it seems to be something going on that really bothers me. How come someone got flamed? It seemed an innocent enough question, and whether the person wanted to see the new journal or to...

    Dead foals

Proportionately, the sacks are harder for the minis to break. The sacks might be the same size as the biggies, but a biggier has more strength due to a proportionately bigger size and size of legs/hooves. Which can kick harder and with more strength - a 120 lb. big foal or a 25 lb. mini? Also...

Newborn foal with deformed foot; advice please

So sorry about your little filly. I hope your vet can help her relax her joint. Thinking of you and your filly.

What is your favorite color(s) on a horse?

"A good horse is never a bad color." That statement is true for me. If I see a real beauty, it doesn't matter what color it is. My personal favorites are: Buckskin Dun Silver Bay Palomino (golden) I like horses with chrome also on the face and legs. That really looks striking to me. We...

Seasoned mare not getting a milk bag?

Some mares just don't read the book. Some of ours bag up really early and we wait and wait. Sometimes they don't have a bag, then WHAM, all of a sudden they are ready to go. The difference the day makes. Taught us a lesson to watch carefully- every day- even if they don't look full one day...

Foaling / Foals -- Stall Bedding Question

We tried using straw once, but the straw was so thick and coarse that we didn't like it. Shavings go on top of the stallmats, and now we use soft grass hay. Cleaning is not as hard as the straw.
