Quilt? Barn Hangings

I am posting this for a friend, we are wondering about those quilt like things that you can find hanging on the outside of barns. What kind of wood is generally used for them? how are edges sealed? kind of paint? Any other info on them, hope you know what I am talking about LOL!!!!
