I agree with the others, he doesn't have breeding or halter conformation but doesn't mean he couldn't do showmanship, jumping and trail classes. He's be a great 4-h mini too!

But I can tell you right now, I have a gelding who is a bit cowhocked and he has pulled 1st and 2nds in halter classes many times over some really nice minis. Just the way you show them off and the judges opinion. You NEVER know what the judge is going to like.
 
I feel bad for the situation, too. Please know though that the breeders (of the colt and your friend) were very likely sincere. People see things differently, or have different ideals. I've seen plenty of people in all honesty say this or that horse is going to be a show winner and I personally may not see it AT ALL. It doesn't mean they are not being honest. There's a wide divide out there in what people know and also how they see and evaluate a horse.
