I had to chime in on this one.....
We have owned a Frenchie and my advice is BE CAREFUL !!!!!
We had our Frenchie flown to Sea-Tac Airport and all went fine. I carried her on the car ride home and we started bonding immediately. I loved her SO MUCH. She was my shadow, would not let me out of her sight. She was the cutest, sweetest, happiest dog in the world.
At 3 years old her back legs went numb. We took her to vet the next day and they advised us we had to get an MRI because something was wrong with her back. My husband rushed her 3 hours to Portland Oregon on a Friday afternoon to get her to the only place that could do it on that short notice. When the Frecnies develop the problem she had you have 3 days to get it taken of or the effects are irreversable. They came back and she had to go to ER vet to spend the rest of the night, then in the morning we had to pick her up there and take her to our regular vet and same the next night. On Sunday we got her to a well known specialist who thank God was in the area and he took a look at the MRI and our dog. He said right then and there that she either needed surgery immediately or we would have to put her down as she was in pain and could never walk again. We did the surgery and our sweet baby made it ok, and the surgeon was our hero. Over time she seemed to recover and do great, never skipped a beat.
At 7 years old she became very very sick. It turned out she had cancer in her abdomin and it was pushing all the other organs aside. The poor baby, 3 days later we had to put her down. I cried so hard that week and was absolutely devasted. I ended up getting vertigo for a few days.
We loved her more that anything and I miss her so bad, but I will NEVER buy another Frenchie. I talked to our vet and she said they have so many problems with their backs because they way their vertibrae are deformed from the way the are bred. They also suffer from allergies, cherry eye, breathing problems, and more. I would love nothing more to love another Frenchie but I can never ever go throught we did with our little girl.
-- And the cost of the vet, MRI, and surgery was very close to $4000.00 !
PLEASE be careful when buying a Frenchie. It is incredibly heartbreaking to lose them.
