If you read my other post about our "new fishing boat" you know the Casino is a bit of a fixer-upper and Martin had all of about three days to get her ready for the crab opener Dec. 1.

Well, she hadn't left the dock in a year and a half, and she has a lot of green sludge growing all over her light blue self. Most of that is gone, the rotted off exhaust has been repaired, etc. etc.

I was all set to go rent a movie to wait out the last six hours, when I got a phone call to run to Englund Marine and buy a specific sodium bulb so that they had a bright light to run gear with in the dark (since the season starts at midnight). Of course, they did not have it in stock, so had to wait for the runner to bring one over from Ilwaco. Meantime, I drove over to the local machine shop and picked up a clamp for the exhaust, and back to Englund Marine then grab some dinner at a restaurant near the basin (all the while the two youngest boys are in tow), and back to the boat. It won't start!

So back to the store to buy a battery charger and groceries for the trip. The trip that MAY not happen.

All the other boats are all ready and everyone's scurrying around the parking lot. Easy to get run over by an errant Hyster on this day.

Martin's home for a bath and a quick nap before he goes again to see if the boat will start at midnight. It will have been charging for a few hours by then. The batteries are just too old to get it going. Probably doesn't help that it's 30 degrees.

One of the crew members had a little car accident today w/his dad's truck and Martin was driving that truck home so that I would have ours. Well, he got pulled over b/c the tail light is out and showing white to the rear (got broken in the accident).

So far, all's going as expected in that nothing's going the way it's supposed to.

Even the bait got put in the freezer (forty degrees below zero, no way it will thaw out in time to use it tomorrow morning) rather than the "cooler" which is more of a refrigerator in the 30-something degree range).

Yesterday, Terry, the other deckhand got his right hand crushed while they were out on the dump boat putting pots out. Luckily it was not broken, but he's working in a wrap/brace. I am very glad he was not badly maimed, but what a way to start the season. Or wait, it hasn't even gotten started, yet!

I should have a couple new photos and sorry if this all seems like "greek" it's been a LONG day and all of this stuff should have been done months ago. If only we'd had the chance to DO it then.

Ahhhhh! I'd been SO hoping it would start! I'm sorry for all the stuff happening. How frustrating! I'm glad Terry's hand isn't broken and that the other deck hand wasn't hurt in the accident. What else could go wrong?? I have my fingers crossed that things get better from here on out!

Lots of stress going on. {{{{Hugs}}}}

Hope all the bad stuff is behind and only good ahead.

Liz,

I will be thinking of you today. I hope everything starts to go better. Good luck!

Good luck!

I used to watch "deadliest catch" wish it were still on, sure looked like an intense job!

Yeah, I told Martin last night that someday he'd look back and laugh about this whole comedy of errors.

The majority of the problem is that he's completely unfamiliar with the boat, it has been sitting unused for a long time, and he has only had a few days to get ready.

Most times, the work to prepare the boat begins a few months before the season potentially starts. In years past, the season didn't begin until as late as Jan. 15, but this year, right on Dec. 1 (which is really actually good!).

I have no news right now, he left here at midnight, and his phone's going right to voice mail, which it usually does when he's on the water.

Fingers still crossed!

Liz

So the boat must have started? Hope so!! I went back and read your initial thread about the boat, I'm so happy for you and your family, will keep you in my thoughts and prayers that all goes REALLY well from here on out!

Well, that means that the boat started!

That obstacle is out of the way, the boat is out.

I hear that there is a storm coming in tomorrow? I do not see it on MSN weather but hear from folks down there that it is all over the news in the Portland area. Do you know anything?

Oh Man,,,

I almost called you yesterday at midnight ( Friday/Saturday) Glad I didn't bother you. You guys have enough on you plate. Hope it is fixed and Martin and his crab city gang are out there getting some superior crablets!

Liz, I'll be watching to hear how the first night out went. Fantastic that he got out on the water the first night with such little time to prepare, and then all the obstacles yesterday! I can't wait for the first fresh crab of the season.

Annette...we're still waiting for the Portland area storm. Yesterday wet snow flurries but it is still pretty warm (38-40˚) and no wind yet

I don't know how the coastal weather is though.

Gee Liz, maybe you should name the boat "The Procrastinator!"

Although you may not want that name for good eh?

Wishing for the best and I mean the best!

Yeah, the "last minute" or something would be good, but I Figure the Casino works, also, beings as it's a gamble.

I may try to call Hub (the man he fished w/last year and who's out there w/him nearby) as I know he may have a visual and radio contact with him, just so I can put my mind at ease.

One thing is that there is a whole community out there on the water, right now, and all of them know who he is. He did say he'd be fishing at first on a flood tide (coming in) so if something broke down and he lost power, he would be getting pushed in to the river as opposed to being sucked out over the bar and out into the ocean.

Don't like to think of that, but one has to have a contingency plan....!!! A real cliffhanger/nailbiter. In slow motion!

There IS a storm coming, tomorrow. Martin's been aware of it for the last week. He wants to get through his gear once or twice before that, and move them to safer areas if possible (the current runs hard when there's a lot of water going through the river, and sands in the pots).

It's ok, Kim, you can call, but call on the house phone as Martin has the cell and isn't answering.

Thanks, everyone, for the good wishes.

I am thinking of you guys.......this is quite the new adventure for you all......heres keeping my fingers & toes crossed that all goes better than expected for Martin and crew while they are out on the water.
