Hello all!
I took in a 9 year old rescue mare (approximately 35") about 3 months ago. She had basically been starved and neglected for her entire life, was disgustingly thin, never seen a farrier, had skin problems and lice, FULL of round worms, and of course had been in foal for most of her life (I was forced to leave her this years foal at the previous "owner's" and she aborted about a month after I got her).
I have been able to deworm her a few times, vaccinate her, trim her feet and she has put on some weight. However her weight gain progress has been much slower than I would like and I think I need to tweak her feeding program. Currently she get 4 lbs. of Buckeye Safe and Easy pellets (didn't want her to founder), about 1 lb. of beet pulp, and good quality all-grass hay every day split into 2 feedings. I am considering going to a complete feed - perhaps Purina Equine Senior? In your opinion would this be a good switch, or do you have any other feeding suggestions? I have access to Buckeye and Purina products. Thanks!
