I just watched on the news that a neighbors pit bull dog attacked a beautiful horse in foal named Little Miss Molly. The lady is devasted. The pit bull climbed over the fence and killed her mare and of course lost the baby also. The pit bull was not done yet. He mauled the other three mares that she had before being caught by the dogs owner. The owner of the horse said the esitmated value of her mare is 10,000. The news should be online tomorrow on www.myfoxkc.com

I'm sorry but as much as I truly feel so very sorry for that woman and her horses. My deepest sympathies for her, but what's the exact saying

"punish the deed, NOT the breed" or something like that. Pit bulls can be some of the most loving dogs there is.

I also just saw this on my local news. My prayers and sympathy go out to her on her great loss. Pit bull owners must start being held accountable for their dogs actions, not just pit bulls but all breeds. Sheila

Oh Sheila, I do greatly agree that the dog's owner should be held accountable, to the fullest extent possible because it is such a tragedy, but as you said also not just pit bulls or even pitbull owners, but all the breeds.

I saw that report too and before the actual story (that is the WORST t.v. news station) on the teasers I saw the fencing and told hubba "her fencing is very high, that dog was on a mission."

The dog has to go, it will kill again. As reported, it crushed the mares windpipe so she suffocated in her own blood. Painful and fearful way to die.

And Cimarron, I've been peeking at the BB waiting for your darling girl to foal!! You phone the clinic if it happens during the day!! Keeping all fingers and hooves crossed!!

Well, in the parish next to us(Louisiana, they are parishes not counties) a lady lost ALOT of livestock, not due to dogs, but humans, she lost chickens, dogs, goats, and 2 horses. They think they are using a large knife of some sort. So its not just dogs right now, its also humans!

I feel very sorry for this lady, I would be devestated, I would sue the owners(if known), its a hard situation, but some kind of message should be sent out there that people have to pay for what their pets destroy.

Something like this should carry an automatic death penalty for the dog.

Sorry I know a lot of you think a dog can be "retrained" but not form something like this they cannot.

I do not believe a dog that kills livestock will go on to kill a human but I do know that if there were to be a child wrapped around a Mini protecting it a dog out to kill would not discriminate.

The breed is totally irrelevant- you can have truly aggressive Cocker Spaniels and you can have truly soppy Pit Bulls- the difference is in what happens when they are aggressive- a Cocker Spaniel is highly unlikely to actually go out and hunt anything to death, unfortunately a Pit Bull (and a number of other breeds) do have this tendency bred in- you also need to have the dog dangerously out of control, and this is the "blanket law" you could invoke- NO DOG should be "dangerously out of control" whether it be on the street or in your field, or wherever.

ALL dogs should be kept under control- after all a Chihuahua with nasty tendencies can cause a child to fall into the path of a car.

Dogs were domesticated to help us hunt, to guard us, and to be our companions, if they are not doing this they are of no use to us and, basically, should be removed from society as a dog that does not abide by the rules is a menace.

Irrespective of breed, the breed of the dog has nothing to do with the possibilities for danger and tragedy.

We should not be permanently at risk from attack by animals that are supposed to be our friends.

If you continue the "witch hunt" against Pit Bulls you will NOT stop the attacks- believe me I speak from experience here.

The MORONS that own these dogs will just go out and get something else- here it is generally a Cane Corso/ Mastiff X Pit Bull or even Boxer, bred specifically to be "nasty" which Pit Bulls have never been, and so then you need to make another law.

And, this time, let's include Dobermans, GSDs and Rottweilers because the last law was so popular.

In the end you will end up with no breeds acceptable to anyone except the Police, the armed Forces and the Criminals!!!

Great work.

NEVER start a "witch hunt" you may end up being branded a witch!!!

I feel for this woman, I truly do- it is a pity she could not have just shot the dog and I do hope she is able to prosecute the owner to the full extent of the law BUT it is the antiquated laws and the irresponsible owners that are at fault, NOT the breeds of dogs.

Oh thats terrible. People really need to start getting a clue when they own pit bully breeds. It terrible, dogs are only born that way becuase of bad breeding, as well as stupid owners. While I feel so bad for the owner of those horses, that pitbull has my sympathy as well. In the end, it was only doing what came natural becuase its owners did a poor job on attending to it. I wish they would tighten up on breeding of these dogs, ban backyard breeders and certify professional breeders.

Pit Bulls are not really any more predisposed towards killing than is, for example a Rottweiler.

JRT's are definitely more predisposed towards killing than Pit Bulls and are often actively encouraged to do so- but JRTs do not normally target horses.

BUT the horse knows no difference between a dog that offers a real threat- like a PB or Rottie, GSD or Dobe etc- and a Chihuahua- sop a small dog threatening a horse can often spook it and cause as much damage as a bigger dog attacking it.

Dogs should not be allowed near horses without control- the breed is irrelevant.

Ditto Jane! :aktion033: It is not the breed, I have known some of the most loving and wonderful pits! It is usually an owner problem but not always...just look at what happened with me and Jack yesterday...a wee jack russle not even a year old...no not the breed, just some dogs in general. My heart breaks for that poor lady nonetheless.

Oh my.......what a horrible story.

Thanks for sharing..........what can a person do.???...........I also have field fence all around my minis..........how scary to know that that may not be good enough.

How Devastating, my sympathies go out to Kay on the loss of her beloved mare and unborn foal....I would be LIVID!!!!!!!!!! I do feel the owner should be responsible, and also that the dog should be put down...........no matter what breed any animal that would do this should be put down. I would put my own dog down in an instant if it ever did anything like that...

I have been showing, raising, and breeding Pembroke Welsh Corgis for close to 30 years now, and although I can only tell you "for certain" things about this paticular breed, I also know that people buying dogs as puppies can only see that baby face and waddle. They don't think OR aren't told about the "Whole Story".

All dog breeds were bred for a reason. Herding dogs herd, Working dogs work, The Toys were mostly bred to be companions, etc. Since these breeds have been around for centuries sometimes, they have an INSTINCT for what they were bred for. American Stadffordshire Terriers ("Pit Bull" is a slang word for an Am Staff cross OR a misnomer used by unknowing people) were bred to FIGHT .

When people come here to be interviewed for a new puppy from here, I warn them that "I", the ",Mighty and Awsome, Alpha Bitch", pick puppies for people. ( After their temperment testing) They do not do the picking. They stay here for hours on their first interview while I ask them tons of questions about their lifestyle, home, how they plan to walk this dog in a blinding snowstorm or driving rain....all the while I'm watching them and their children interact with my dogs. They are invited to ask any and all questions and em me later with more.

I TELL them the inherited problems with our breed, and that I have x-rayed, tested, taken them to veterinary specialists, and any other thing available to me, to be as sure as I can, that the two dogs I bred have NOTHING to contribute to inherited diseases. I tell them that corgis shed 20 hours a day and those times they aren't shedding they are THINKING about shedding. I tell them that they can bark A LOT, and that they will herd anything and everything.

If people who breed dogs go over and over with their new owners then people will understand that dogs all have different traits they SHOULD KNOW ABOUT!!! These include agression. If someone goes home with one of my babies and they don't know the WHY of something, THAT is MY FAULT!

If I have screened these people well enough, they understand why a dog does that and what they can do about it....(CALL ME ASAP!)

Back yard breeders, pet stores who sell puppies, Puppy Millers DO NOT DO THAT.

Infrequently I send people to other breeders of another breed because I fell that a corgi is not in their best interest FOR THE PEOPLE AND THE DOG! Invariably they call and thank me.

BTW, ALL my PET puppies leave here with a neutering REQUIREMENT, a LIFETIME guarantee of inherited health problems and a LIFETIME return policy. MY contract says if the dog is found to be running free I can and WILL come take it back..... Anyone buying for show and resulting breeding has a tougher time getting one, and they leave on a co-own, have contracts up the wazoo, and is usually a great friend before the dog leaves......

But I digress........If we got rid of the irresponsible people breeding for the children, BYB, the pet stores, and puppy millers and people who are breeding for the money!(HA! If they are doing it right they wouldn't be making any money!....When I finally breed a bitch here I have $4000.00-$5000.00 into her and that is if she came from here. Add another $25-3000.00 if I bought her)

If these dogs were first with RESPONSIBLE BREEDERS then 99% of them would not be with IRRESPONSIBLE OWNERS!

Flame suit on and NOT budging!

 So sorry for your loss.

I too feel like once any animal attacks and kills should be put down. However, the big picture here is the owners of these dogs should be the ones to blame. We have many wild dogs here, actually they are pets but the owners just don't care, and thats the problem.

I keep hearing all these dog attacks I'm getting so paranoid now. I was out driving my horse in the pasture 1 day and a pack of wild dogs came running towards my way and barking like mad. I was scared but told them to shut up and they turned around running lol. Too bad my dog is too chicken with strange dogs too keep them out

If my dog were to ever attack she for sure would be put down. Thankfully she is to scared of them and they would rather try to stomp her to death. The only thing my dogs wants to kill and eat is birds, but she is a bird dog and that is why is is on a leash when ever there are birds around she could get at.

That said I no longer drive my gelding at my moms. There are so many very dangerous dobies, lab mix and rotts around there. The neighbor out back has 2 big black dogs, looked like labs or lab mixes. They are not tie or kenneled just lose. I had my gelding out one day there were growling, barking and salavating. I hope to god they never come over to the horses, but if they do the gun is always ready. AS well as the neighbors with dogs know that if there dog ever steps foot in my pastures they will be shot dead. (moms bf took it upon himself to tell them all that) We also have pretty decent neighbors that watch over the horses. We get calls if there are any strange animals around and what not just to let us know.

This is very upsetting and shocking to me.

That must have been one very aggressive dog. For a lone dog to take on a horse, with intent to kill, there is something seriously wrong with a dogs temperament.

I have had dogs and horses my whole life and never had a problem.

Dogs killing chickens, pet rabbits, sheep is very common but to take on a horse is very serious(not implying it is OK for any animal to suffer just less surprising)

My jrt's will bark at the horses if they are running around and then the horses run more and then the dogs think it is fun..............of course, they do this through a fence BUT the dogs know this is not OK! Hence the double fencing.

My lab is terrified of my horses because they nibble her! and in reality my jrts are scared of the horses too. Although any animal is unpredictable to a point, I had no idea this was such a problem.

I must say I think it is NOT breed specific......I have had jrt's my whole life and have NEVER known one to kill anything other than vermin. That said if you own a dog you must be responsible for it.

I have known many nice pitbulls BUT I have known many that I wouldn't trust so I wouldn't own one. I guess each person has different experiences with different breeds.

Sorry most importantly I have great sympathy for the horses that suffered and their owner........it is awfully sad.
