I have a mare that can't get into foal. I planned to have her flushed out. Vet recommended flushing her out after I bred her at the end of her heat cycle. She also warned me of possible problems with tearing during palpating. I had a different vet flush a mare out for retained placenta and she never palpated. Just wondering the best procedure for a mini.

I guess what I'm really interested in knowing is should I be afraid of the risk in palpating a mini. I just want to know how many of you allow a vet to palpate your mares and if you have ever had any problems.

The risk of tearing a rectum while palpating is quite low. Most Vets have only a couple in their careers. I know of no increase risk for a mini. In fact I've never heard of tearing a mini, but I'm sure the risk remains.

Thank you Dr. Taylor. Is it necessary to palpate to properly perform a flush?
