We went to Dana Farber cancer center today & I must admit I was scared stiff

Rick met his team of doctors a surgeon, radiation specialist and oncologist They are professors at Harvard also so I know he is in good hands

He has to have his tonsils out biopsies to find the primary site if they can - they suspect the cancer began in tonsils or base of tongue The irony is he never smoked but was exposed to questionable substances at work 15+ years ago!

Find it or not he has to have chemo & radiation therapy for 6-7 weeks I will be hoping our winter weather is kind so I make it in to Boston - 30 mile trip each day

I feel so much better They said his cancer is curable but he is in for quite a time with much pain, mouth sores, and dangers of toxicity from the thing that cures him!

Thanks so much for your prayers I truk\ly believe it made a big difference

That is good news that it is treatable Linda. It sounds like he is in quite capable hands. I'll keep your family in my prayers through his treatment.

I'm glad to hear it's treatable; that is wonderful news! He is going to have a rough go of it towards the end of treatment and will probably lose his sense of taste, at least for a while. Your job will be to keep his weight up and meet his nutritional needs(cause he won't feel like eating). I know the cancer centers usually have good tips for this too. Good luck and I will definately keep you both in my prayers!

Linda,

That is great news!

Please do make sure your husband sees a dentist with his proposed treatment regimen prior to his radiation treatments. It is important for him to work closely with his dentist and dental hygienist during these radiation treatments that will directly affect his oral health. They should prescribe fluoride trays and can help with future treatments for the mouth sores, as well as more frequent dental cleanings. Many times, when radiation is localized to the mouth, the salivary glands are destroyed and, as many know, saliva decreases the acidity in your mouth therefore, helping to prevent tooth decay. The dentist may also recommend salivary substitutes to offset the decrease or absence of saliva due to the radiation effects. He will have more problems then mouth sores if his overall oral health is not taken into consideration.

Good luck and keep us updated.

Linda,

I am so relieved for you both that it's treatable.....and the previous posts with advice on his weight and oral health make sense, but I'm sure your physicians are giving you that same sort of advice as well.

I hope your Christmas is going to be a MUCH happier one than you anticipated!

Blessings,

MA
