I, too, have been wondering if perhaps he might have done it to himself. Years ago, we had a dog that chewed the end off of her own tail. The vet had to amputate about 3" to get past the damage she had done, and it took a couple months in a huge Elizabethan collar before she quit trying to go back after it. Dogs can be so dumb!

However it happened, it should have been seen to once it was known about. Clearly, this wasn't done, and I find that inexcusable.
