Somebody just posted about their mare having her foal(early).

She said it wasn't a preemie...Can someone tell me what a preemie is?

Preemie is a premature foal, born before they are fully developed. With minis, preemie is roughly defined as one born before about 300 days gestation. They may or may not survive, depending on how early and how developed they are. A preemie will typically have a very soft, fine haircoat, lungs may not be completely developed, bones are still somewhat soft and they may not even be able to stand by themselves for quite awhile. Their little systems just aren't ready to work yet outside of mom.

Ooh! OK. Thank you.

I've never heard "preemie" used for premature. Thanks again!
