Is there someone in Miniatures who does pedigree research and write-ups? I do know that AMHA and AMHR have studbooks that can be accessed, however I'd like to know if there is a professional that does this.

As some of you may know, I'm new to Miniatures, coming over from Arabians. What I'm looking for is the Miniature horse equivalent of Arlene Magid.

For those of you who don't know her, Arlene does Arabian pedigree research, write-ups, breeding evaluations and recommendations and historical/informational articles. Her write-ups include show and production records of both sire and dam.

So who is the go to pedigree professional for us?? Thanks y'all...Julie

(P.S.....phone won't let me scroll down to to delete next line....just ignore it!)

ETA: finally got here on the laptop and fixed my typo!!

I don't think there is any such person in miniatures.. maybe you could create the "job"!!! I think most of us do our own pedigree research to the extent we can using the stud books. For AMHA anyway, you often end up with "unknowns" who aren't really unknowns at all, but Shetlands. So some extra research might be useful. Again for AMHA, for a small fee you can find out from the AMHA office the show record of each animal that wasn't a World or National champion or reserve. Those show results are listed in the Stud Book.

Diane from Castle Rock Miniatures does pedigrees. You can also do them yourself if you contact either AMHA or AMHR (or both) to buy access to the studbooks.

I was just going to ask a similar question...............

I am about to send in Misty's application to pre-register her. I understand she can't have a permanent registration until she is 3. But I was wondering, the breeder put both the stallion and mare's registration #s on the app. Where could I look up some info on Misty's pedigree? Can I find out background things like colors, heights, owner's names etc...........

You can find a lot by Googling the name of your horse's dam and sire. I do the picture pedigrees for all the horses I raise. I believe Diane started putting pedigrees together after receiving a pdf of a pedigree for a horse she purchased from us. :) Between Google and the 2 regristration studbooks, you can find a lot of information.

As usual, I learned something new on this forum! Sorry I didn't know that there were folks like Diane doing this!

Let me start by saying...THANK YOU to all of you who responded!! I update many of my threads when I come into town with my laptop and have the luxury of internet access on something larger than a phone!

Diane--is this something you do as an income producer? Even though I'm new to Miniatures, I LOVE LOVE LOVE pedigree research, following breeding programs and lines, developing my eye to recognize trends within those lines, and would like to be able to offer this as a service. However, I don't want to infringe on someone else's business! I know that newbies can't offer what experienced people like you can. I would still like to do this though, if it wouldn't offend you.

Mary and Jean--thank you (and others who mentioned) the studbooks on-line. They are a great resource, well worth the price if you're a breeder or pedigree fiend. I will be keeping my eyes peeled for any opportunities to acquire any old advertising items, back issues of The Journal and Miniature Horse World, use the on-line studbooks, get to know breeders, etc., etc.

I figure, if I do it anyway, it's something I enjoy, it's something that isn't so physically demanding that my Lupus would interfere, then I should develop it. So that's why I inquired, to find out whose business I might be interfering with. If I wasn't, then I want to add this to my 5 year farm plan I'm working on.

Thanks y'all!! (((Huuuuuggss))) for supporting a newbie
