I finally got into the dentist today. THe last 3 appointments have been canceled as they didnt have the gas in yet and you dont touch me with out it.

We are trying to get as much done as possible to maximize my insurrance before it runs out the end of the month.

I had a filling done today..........well the numbing stuff wore off and now it hurts. Ekkk Tommorow I have to go to a specialist for a root canal. Will get done with that just in time to go to class  Then monday I head back to the regular dentist to have 2 more fillings, maybe 3. They have to take xrays to see if the one can be filled or if it has to a root canal to. I so so so dont like the dentist. And this isnt helping matters!1

me too me too!!! probaly a combination of having braces as a kid (which meant spending HOURS upside down in that chair with my mouth open!!!) and the fact that when i was young, our dentist once slapped me (because he gave me 4-5 shots and i still said it hurt... well IT DID. not sure what went wrong, it usually only took 1 or 2 all the other times). hindsight being 20/20 i should have told my mother he hit me... big :nono: even 35+ y ears ago...

i am dreading going again, i haven't been in too long... my bad, putting it off, but i keep doing it... even when i found a dentist i really liked, i still didn't like GOING!

I so feel your pain. I had to get a root canal years ago. The dentist I went to told me it would take three trips. After two and crying a lot he told me he couldn't help me anymore. So they sent me to an endontist. Best thing I could have ever done. They were so patient and within an hour and a half I was done. They had to redo everything the other dentist attempted to do. Never again will I use a regular dentist for a root canal. I walked out with no pain and felt great. I hope they are sending you to a great specialist like I had. I even told them what had happened at the other place and that I was frightened out of my mind. They were so wonderful. I couldn't have asked for more patient people. They would constantly ask me if I was ok and if needed a break or needed anything at all. The other place was just a big rush to try and get you in and out.

I will say there was only one part that I found a tiny bit frightening and they walked me through it. My root canal was the very last molar. They did one particular shot for numbing that made my heart skip a beat. They had warned me that it was going to happen, but it was still a little scary. It did give me total pain relief and I'm so glad they told me in advance that was going to happen.

I have now found a wonderful dentist. The other dentist was a real joke and was only there to take my insurance companies money and to torture the patients.

My regular dentist has done 2 of them for me already. THey dont bother me. I have to go to a specialist for this one because my roots are twisted and and funky so they are not comfortable doing it. Its also the first molar. Just dont like it!

I know how you feel. I need to go later this year, when I get my courage and $$ saved up.

It's a good idea to get it all taken care of, as you don't want to get into a situation where you'd need more than just the fillings/root canals.

Good luck and take some motrin or something maybe for the pain?

Liz

I too have had bad experiences with dentists in the past. A root canal where the shot didn't numb the pain, and it was time to close so they were in a hurry. My new dentist where I live now is wonderful in personality and chairside manner. They told me that pain is not allowed!!! They will also perscribe a valium if I want it or nitrous oxide for only $34. Where I live now everybody is so happy and not stressed with the hub bub of life of the big city that I feel very comfortable. may take them up on the valium though. LOL Just to relax. Good luck tomorrow, times have changed and hopefully they will take care of you like they should.

BTW, my new dentists allows dogs in the office. His own standard poodle walks around a visits the patients. :aktion033: :aktion033:

Normally I dont mind going to the dentist (Ok, no one LIKES going to the dentist...I wouldnt think??), I had the same dentist for 32 years...But, he just retired this past December, so now I have to find a NEW dentist....scary!!! :new_shocked:

You are brave to have all those things done in such a short period of time, but I understand why you are doing....still ICK!!!

I feel your pain! Ive just started getting a huge amount of work done on my teeth, because I didnt go to the dentist for 2 years (whoops!) - as I drink a lot of coke (whoops again) theres about 6 fillings to do, a couple of them pretty big jobs and one a root canal.

I didnt go because like LindaL, my dentist i've had my whole life retired and I didnt know where to go... in the end, I found the most wonderful dental surgery, where they do most of the work with Water Lasers (there are some exceptions), so no numbing shots needed in most cases and NO DRILLS. It costs about the same as regular dentistry, and makes the whole ordeal bareable for a wimp like me. :new_shocked:

I wish they could do it with you completely zonked out, so you wake up and its all over. That'd suit me WAY better.

Oh I feel for you, I still do not like going to the dentist.........and I am maaried to mine :new_shocked: :bgrin

I think my bad experice as a child is what did me in. I also didnt go for several years. Then when I was on my own it was time to play catch up, but I cant seem to catch up.

It needs to be done as it is really starting to bother me but still. I dont know the dentist. They said he is good but not sure.

I wish they could put me to sleep and do everything at once and just be done with it.

I hear you...it's been three years for me, and I know I've got one that will need a root canal.

Sucks b/c we have no insurance for dental, though we send the boys every six months (they have EXCELLENT teeth, or likely I would have to sell my whole herd to get 'em fixed up!), it's hard to choke down both the fear and the cost!

I hope you're feeling better before you know it. You have my sympathy and awe for your bravery!

OWEEEEEE

I am not going back. I cried in the chair! First they had a hard time getting me numb, then they had to you some liquid numb stuff and it went down my throat and I almost threw up. Then they had to stick a shot of numb stuff right in the nerve. I was fliping around thrashing and crying.

Then I had to go to school after the fact. They also had no gas!

Ashley,

See if you have a dentist in your area that does oral sedation dentistry. If you are a candidate for it, you would receive a "cocktail" of oral medicines that would allow you to feel relaxed on a higher level than simply using the Nitrous Oxide gas. It is not like IV sedation as you are not put completely under but rather, you are completely relaxed and awake but without all the "painful memories" and the high risk associated with being "put under". The other beauty of oral sedation is it will allow you to have a good chunk of your work done in one appointment; a big plus in my book.

And LindaL, my husband is doing sedation dentistry and is in your 'neck of the woods'.

Liz, give Dr. Dave Carneiro a call there in Astoria. He comes highly recommended.
