a friend has just emailed, her mare just had a foal at 12 noon today, it has a very swollen and distended penis, has any one heard of this before? I have advised calling the vet.

thank you

We had our first colt a week ago.

With no 'boy' experience I was a bit

startled to see that, too.

I asked about and it's normal.

My farrier says if it was retracted at

this stage he would wet himself.

He assured me it will come up soon.

How swollen? Can you post a picture? Their glans can not be exposed for several months, there is a skin bridge which prevents it from fully extending.

All newborn colts distend theirs, but usually after birth, if it was distended during birth it may have gotten injured during delivery. I would call the vet asap, and note if any urine dribbles from the navel as well. If the penis is swollen it is a red flag and means a call to the vet. Maybe the owner could apply some cool wash rags to the area until the vet arrives to help stop it from swelling any more.
