Ok, I don't have a picture that shows it, but my mare has coloring I have NEVER seen on another horse, never heard of it either.

She's chestnut, just a plain old, red chestnut. Mane and tail matches her body.

But, she has a few small (size of pencil eraser up to a dime) white spots. AND, she has dark spots too. One is about the size of a silver dollar, and heart shaped (it's cute!).

Every year, when we clip her in the spring, we'll discover a few more white spots.

She's about 13 years old.

Anybody got any clues?

Does she have appaloosa in her bloodlines? Sounds like a snowflake appaloosa.

I agree to the 'birdcatcher spots'. Our neighbors mare got those for about 3 years and then they went away last year, LOL

However, if she has appaloosa parentage and characteristics, (white sclera, any mottled skin) it could be snowflakes.

I agree- it sounds like Birdcatcher spots. My chestnut is developing Bend Or spots, the dark ones that appear on the skin. Every year when I clip him I find a few more! He's got a big one over his tailhead.
