I wanted to add that some of the horses in the sale were racks of bones and others in full winter coats with no grooming done at all! Not even the shavings and dirt brushed off!! People just don't seem to understand that if you want your horse to bring the most it will at a public auction, you need to have it fit like a show horse! It can make so much difference in the selling price!

I agree with that! Also, if you want your weanlings to bring a good price, for gosh sakes, feed them and worm them. There were a few there that had the big pot bellies and their backbones were sticking up. They were also scarfing down the shavings because they didn't have any hay and were hungry.

Mary

edited to add: I noticed that the guy from Texas that buys all of the horses that he can that go really cheap was there and bought several. I hate to think what he is doing with them.

Ok, that makes me feel a little better about those prices, man, what a shame!

The comment about the buyer from Texas made me wonder about my friend's horse. She bought/rescued him from a horse trader in NM, who went to a sale in south Texas. The Texas dealer buys up lots of little horses so he can have them available for Christmas presents . The NM trader said he had hundreds. She brought nearly 100 to NM to sell, also for Christmas presents. The hrose my friend got was neglected, dirty, and unkempt, but not starving. Probably the reason he was the only one left with the trader, was he was cryptorchid. He had registration papers. If my friend had not bought him, he was going back to the sale. This was in January, after there was no longer a chance for him to be chosen as a Christmas present. (She wanted another horse as a companion to her little mare pet, and saw the newspaper ad.)

So, yes, it is important for the horse to appear well groomed and cared for at the sale. It may make a big difference in its future home. If he is destined to be a Christmas present, he will more likely be chosen if he is nicely presented.

Please, don't feel too good about those prices. Not ALL of the horses were in that kind of shape, just some of them. Some of them were truly sad cases in need of rescue. Some of them were great little horses going for really bad prices.

It helps explain some of the prices but doesn't make me feel any better about the poor little horses that are in such deplorable condition.

Actually before anyone feels better about those prices go take a look at what the horses at LKF went for.

One thing I have learned is that you can't always go by pictures or prices listed as far as what is a bargain and what is not. That's why I like to go and see in person. There were some horses that went really cheap. Many of them would have been a bargain for a starter herd. BUT, I have horses for sale and saw very few that I liked better than some I am offering for sale. One that I did really like ( a half sister to one of my mares) was a yearling filly and she went for $2,100. I was really happy to see her bring that. There was really only one stallion that really made me go WOW! A 29 inch Bond Snippet son that sold for $2,000. Good Lord knows I don't need any more stallions.

Hey, Freeland, that stallion was a BARGAIN!!! He could hold his own in any competion or be a worthy breeding stallion. If I wasn't so stallion poor, he would have come home with me!

Missed visiting with you. I saw you, but never got the chance to talk.

I would say the majority of the horses, with the exception of a few, were lower end horses anyway and wouldn't warrant high prices in any kind of condition. That said, weight, grooming and presentation would have tremendously helped most.

With three miniature horse sales yesterday, it seems like the prices are about the same every where. In Mt Airy they were the lowest I have ever seen. Several horses never made it to $200. Not sure what the high selling horse was but it was under $2000. Bred mares going for $300 - $600, nice buckskin stallion by a Res World Grand Champion for $400. So it sounds like it was the same at the other sales as well.

If that older gentleman

was bidding one one of my horses I'd PO it so fast it would make your head spin--I don't care what he was offereing. Have seen this man in action as to how he transports horses FIRST HAND. Will not post it here but let's just say there were about 5 of us that offered to take his horse home in a safe mode of transportation.

Mary I did not see you, sorry I missed you. Freeland, Charlotte, Becky and Vicki was nice to see all of you and say HI.

Does anyone who got the Bond Snippet son? He was one I was interested in. But couldn't make it to the sale.

Let me explain my statement: I should have said that "I feel a *tiny* bit better" about those prices.
default_sad.png
Auction prices are low all over right now, apparently. Sad.
default_sad.png
It isn't the best time of year to be selling, IMO, with winter coming on and not really being able to clip horses up for presentation (at least if you live in a climate like mine!) but I would have dearly loved to have been at the Little King sale! A herd of horses couldn't have stopped me from bidding, lol!

Hey Becky. Missed visiting with you too. When I saw you, you were talking with someone else and I didn't get the chance. I had a really good visit with Ralph and Shirley Bear and also with Frank. It was well worth the trip, even when I wasn't planning to buy.

Foalfan don't you have an announcement to make?
default_smile.png
I sure do!

I am happy to announce we came home with a great little filly!

We found our new girl to take to our senior home visits. All 26 3/4 " of her.

We were fortunate to find a small filly with a people lovin personality.

She made the 600 mile trip home like a trooper and announced her presence to the other horses as she walked off the trailer at 2 a.m. What a girl!

Thank goodness she was not clipped for the auction, it's already in the low 40's here at night.

( Sorry there is no pictures, camera is dead)

Mary, Cledith and I enjoyed meeting you! Thanks for visiting with us.
