I have a few mares that are here to be covered and one was in season when she arrived and 15 days later she is still peeing everywhere

Eagle still wants to cover here and she is more than obliging. She has even made her legs sore from pee constantly. I am washing her and applying nappy rash cream. Is that o.k?

Another mare has been in season for 8 days and is still very willing!

The last mare has been in season for 9 days?

What is happening? My mares where all in season for about 6 days and then they stopped.

Help!!!

All 3 were out with Eagle for the first week but I took him out cos he was exhausted. Also I have a much bigger mare that he has to cover that I don't feel comfortable putting with the small girls as one of them has a month old foal.

I brought a leased stallion in this year to breed my girls. Here is what happened to me. Mare #1 went into heat immediately, bred her for 4 days, and she seemed to go out of heat. 7 days later she went into another heat and was bred for 10 days. No further heats have been seen from her.

#2 started her heat 2 days after the stallion arrived, she bred for 11 days and has now tested positive with weefoal 38! This same mare bred 13 days for her last foal. She always gets in foal though, so worth hte extra work.

The other mares had heats from 3 - 7 days (which seems average for my barn)

I always continue to breed as long as the mare is willing and the stallion is interested. It seems to work itself out in the end.

Might still be in transition - I know it is late for that, but some mares aren't paying close attention to the calendar this year.

Another thought is that the mare might be having non-ovulating folicles develope - the only way you can check this out is thru an internal ultrasound -- they are a big PITA since the mare stays in heat, doesn't ovulate, and it can screw things up for a couple of months. It does not seem like any of the regular shots to take a mare out of season affect these folicles - they pretty much have to dissolve on their own.

Thanks for all your advice, I guess the pony porn will continue

I have heard from friends that giving mares raspberry leaf (Herb) can help straighten out their cycles especially mares that continually cycle.

Raspberry leaf is the primary ingredient in Mare Magic which is often used to "soften" a mare's heat cycle - I do believe that it can also help regulate the cycle, but I was warned that it also can tend to make the cycle less obvious, (less "strong) so not necessarily what you would want for a mare that you want to breed

Mares can be so tricky ! ! !

And then once we DO actually get a pregnancy we sit on pins & needles for 10-11 months and then go thru endless days of sleep deprivation for the birth of the special little bundle, only to have our closely monitored mare decide that she needs to foal out in the paddock about 30 seconds after you put her out there while clean her nursery stall for the 20th time that DAY!

Last yr my mare Slaney was in Season for 11 days - that was a record for her and the other filly about 7 days. Also last yr there were a few cases of mares being covered but then showing a season again 8 wks later but had actually taken on the first cover.

I hope they sort themselves out soon and your stallion can get some rest

This post is so interesting, I didn't breed any mares last year because here on the east coast of the states sales have been down and I still have yearlings to go. Seems that this year, not sure if it is the weather or what but, mares have been in a continus cycle. When ever they see a stallion they present every day it seems, stallions go crazy when near a mares paddock, seems like it never ends. Not the usual 28 days but every day. I'm not sure what is going on, has me baffled.
