Id like to ge some opinions on grazing muzzles. Can they be left on 24/7 as long as you keep checking on them and use a breakaway halter? thank you in advance for your opinions.

I think that they can be. One thing about them that worries me (would be something to keep an eye out for) is that even though minis are supposed to be able to drink with one -- that doesn't mean they will drink with one. I'd keep an eye out to be sure they are drinking and of course, would take it off at feed time.

I wouldn't leave them on 24/7 if it were me

when we have used one we only had it on when the mare(slight founder) (not in foal) was on pasture

then they had their regular ration of hay in their stall morning and evening

I would not want a horse to try to live on the little they get through a grazing muzzle

Just my thoughts

JMHO, but I hate em! Unless needed for medical reasons, but a dry lot would do instead. Imagine yourself witha mask on whether you liked it or not. I would be so worried about drinking also.

I hate them too- I can see with a laminitic horse- in order to turn it out for socialising etc they could have their uses but as a means of diet??

No, sorry, just imagine how you would like it??

[SIZE=12pt]I have an awsome gelding who is terribly prone to grass founder and so spends most of his life in a dry lot. Grazing muzzles are a wonderful option to allow him to go out occasionally with the rest of the kids and act like a horse :bgrin But it is only used for a couple of hours at a time and only once in a while at that. For him a grazing muzzle is his friend :bgrin Poor little wad

I personally hate grazing muzzles on a regular basis........ Not just for possible accidents, but for the horse's emotional and mental wellbeing. I've seen horses wearing them at horse shows to keep them from eating the bedding (which makes sense), but they are also very depressed with them on.

If it's at all possible, making a dry lot may be a better bet, IMO.

Thanks Everyone for the opinions. I guess it would be depressing to wear a muzzle for such a long time..I would be concerned about drinking too like some of you guys said.
