My little Teaspoon just turned 2 last month. She still has an itty bitty mane - when will it start to grow out? I own her mother also and she has the longest, silkiest mane - when it's freshly groomed and then 5 minutes later she rolls in the dirtiest part of the pasture she can find.

I think a lot of it is genetics. I have a mare with a fantastic mane bred her to a stallion with a fantastic mane received a great mane in the foal. Have a gelding who's mane is short like maybe 4" long, his mother was the same way from pictures I have seen.

Now genetics may give you a long mane and a pasture mate might just trim it up for you too! Had that happen on a mane and tail or two.
