Hi

I have a mare that is registered tobiano.

But she has some white on her face (white chin, snip and star) does this make her splash aswell?

She is in foal to a solid stallion so I tried the colour calculator and it says shes now has a 75% chance of a pinto foal if she carries tobiano + splash.

Is this right?

Also can anyone show me a picture of a horse that just carries splash

Thanks

Typically splash gives the horse LOTS of face white (wide blazes, bald/apron face).. It's very possible that she could carry the frame gene though it too tends to throw some of the wilder face markings (though chin white and snips are common) and it's also possible that she simply carries sabino..

Do you have photos of her?

If you can post pictures of her, from the side and of her face, it would be easier.

I have a mare that is a minimal splash. She has two blue eyes are her face markings are typical of a splash. Her dam is most definitely splash and can be viewed on the Redrock Miniature Horse Farm website. Here is Redrock Neon Starlight, out of East Acres Starry Night:

Splashes tend to have bottom heavy markings that are often off center, and usually have blue eyes. The above mare has one partial blue eye, and the mare below has two blue eyes.

This mare, WeeOkies Cool Dudes Parisienne, is tobiano + splash:

And this is my Splash only colt.

Both have white bellies & blue eyes.

Some say that Sabino causes the white chins.

Yes, please do post pics of your horse for us to see!

Hi everyone thanks for the replies.

Sadly I cant upload photos I dont have a cord to connect the camera to the computer lol (really need to get one)

Ill try and describe her face markings better

If looking at her side on from side 1 you can only see all black

from side 2 her entire muzzle looks white, its looks as though she has stuck her face in a bucket of paint about an inch higher than the corner of her mouth. its about 1/3 of her face on that side

from the front the muzzle white goes an inch higher then cut straight down to the bottom of her muzzle (looks pretty cool actally lol) like a giant snip

Her eyes are not blue at all and she has a small star

Her body markings are typical tobiano just figured with the face markings she would have to have some other pattern too

Now that ive confused you all what do you think lol

Actually splash and frame dont always throw loud face markings. One isolated snip on the nose is very characteristic for splash. also, bottom-heavy or off-centered white is typical of splash as well. My stallion (in avatar) carries splash ... amongst other things... and from the left side his face looks solid, but the right side is almost completely white.

Here's a less expressive form of splash..........

Ok I think the extra pattern might be sabino not splash. I found the equine color site and read up on the 2.

The other reason is in the black patch on her side she has a very noticeable area (about the size of a tennis ball) that is full of white hairs like roaning!! Do you think this could be because of sabino aswell??

I just dont know lol

Is there a test for sabino and splash??

She sounds like she does carry Sabino, but her muzzle marking sounds more like Splash to me.

There isn't really a way to test and find out. There's is a test for Sabino 1, but there are 3 different kinds of Sabino... so if your horse tests positive then yes you've proved she is Sabino, but if she tests negative then that doesn't necessarily mean she doesn't carry Sabino.

And there is no test for Splash yet.

A picture would greatly help..... a scanned photo, or even a cell phone pic would do it.

Also, you said her body markings are all tobiano..... so are the edges of all of the color spots solid? Because if they are roaned/feathered looking then that is a Sabino trait. If she doesn't have a chest shield (meaning if she does have a white chest), that is a characteristic of Splash.

You know, she could be both. Well, with face white she's gotta be at least one of them. And/or she could be frame (LWO) as well which you can test for.

The edges of her patches are like threeCfarms pali pinto mare there is no roaning as such.

She has no white across her chest just plain black. The black extends down her front legs to her knee. She has 4 white legs.

She is very symetrical (sp?) with her body markings. She has socks on the front legs and stockings on the back ones her entire back is white but she has 2 large black patches on either side with connect with her back legs.

White goes under her body between her side patches and her black neck.

So sorry I cant do photos I can imagine how hard this is to imagine.

I might do a search on some pinto pics and see if there is one pretty much the same to help

i do appreciate you help

Jill,

My Reflection daughter is LWO pos. but I am not sure if it is from the dam or her sire. Do you know if Reflection has been tested for LWO ? That is her in my avatar well at least part of her..LOL

Jill, your Cross Country colts are frame for sure although they could also be hiding another pattern. Lazy N Red Boy is frame as are many of his offspring.

Here are a few pics of some of my splashed pattern horses. East Acres Stary Night that Stephanie mentioned.

2-07StaryNight1.jpg

And this is Stary Nights' 2008 colt, Redrock Flash Freeze.

Here's a splash/tobiano filly. Redrock Flash Charade. She has an apron face pattern.

6-08Charade.jpg

The sire of the two foals above, Harts Tip Top Flash, is a maximum expression splashed/tobiano stallion. His only color is the medicine hat between his ears and some color in his tail.

Yes, I know they may be LWO (actually, I hope they are), and they will be tested. I do not know if Reflection has been tested or not... I own a daughter of his too, with a blaze face and partial blue eye. If either colt is LWO+, then I'd have her checked, too, if I were to breed her with paternal siblings (very likely I will).

Very typical Splash markings there with the off centered white. BUT, could possibly be caused by Frame.
