Yesterday morning my husband found a young male pep in our front

yard, (We live on a small farm on a country road just off Old Route

66. It's legs looked deformed or crooked so i immediately rushed it

to our local vet. He said it looked to be a border collie pup about 8

weeks old, malnourished, wormy, and with rickets. He gave the little

boy his first set of puppy shots, wormed him, and advised me to feed

him one Pet-Tab dog supplement a day along with free choice dry

Pedigree for puppies and to slowly add canned Pedigree for puppies

once to twice a day. Is there anything else anyone here might know to

help this puppy to heal up (is that the right expression) from

rickets. The poor pup is in a large pen in our garage for 10 days in

case of Parvo although my vet says he didn't think he was likely to

have it as no bloody stool but just to be safe as I have other dogs.

He doesn't get off his pet pillow except to eat, drink a lot, and

relieve himself. He also limps when he walks. He is such a beautiful

sweet boy, although he tries to walk away from people and kind of

cowers when approached. He doesn't tremble or fight when picked up

however, just sits very still while held. Any advice to help this

when we first adopted our dog misty from the shelter she had the early stages of rickets. Her front legs bowed out quite a bit and she was very weak. The vet said the best cure was to play with her in the sun and feed her a good quality food.

It worked wonderfully for her. A decent dietary supplement would probably help him out since it sounds like his is much worse then hers was.

I bet with some time, treats and cuddles he will come around and be a people lover in no time. With him cowering I would probably spend some time just sitting in his area with some yummies and I would let him come to me when he was ready.

Thank you for taking this poor guy in and showing him the love and kindness that he has obviously never had in his short life.

Thought I would post a picture of the puppy and a rather poor one of his front legs
