Gloves are a necessity! I've never had a farrier that wore gloves though LOL, they are a lot tougher than I am.

I've watched farriers work on my horses for many years, long before I picked up a rasp. I can do a decent job trimming the minis now, but one or two horses and I'm worn out. I like the barefoot trimmer with the handle, may have to give that one a shot.

From the sound of it if the rasp is skipping you are trying to hard and using too much pressure. Get a good quality rasp, I like Diamond, and allow the weight of the rasp to do the majority of the work. I use one hand only on the Minis and support the hoof with my other.
