Lyn this is a WONDERFUL idea...

Monette, if gas weren't such a commodity here I'd come and help too (in a heartbeat!) But unfortunately I HAVE to work and drive 80 miles a day to do it...so gas is going to be something that I have to cherish until (I hope we overcome the shortages) normalcy is felt again.

BUT...I would be happy to send you some cashola for gas for your vehicle or for gas for the generator or for ice, or water or whatever else you needed it for!!!

Lyn,

Look at my post right before yours - the info is there and my address is below:

Monette Freeman

139 Coteau Spur

Opelousas, LA 70570

I can not call out long distance, but some can get through to me!

Thank you!!

Monette:

I sent you a PM..

Also (I don't think I saw this earlier) -- if you have not already been to the grocery store.... powerbars -- granola bars -- trailmix and the like are good things that can last a while.. Even Diet slimfast bars... go for nutrition and energy!! Although chocolate is great!! it also melts in that southern heat.

You can buy milk from the shelf -- if your grocery store carries it... it can come in smaller containers and does not require refrigeration until it has been opened.

Non-fat dry skim milk is a good thing too... and powder chocolate to put in it.

Be careful -- hugs to you guys and ANNE too!

I am behind the scene forum member but had to comment.

Best of luck Wisteria; my prayers are with you.

Just and FYI - my husband works for a tree company that was sent down to LA last Sunday. He left today from Lafayette to Hattiesburg. He said that I-10 was closed to all but emergency. He is being escorted by police. Perhaps with your situation they will let you go - hope so.

Not sure if someone mentioned for you to get a tetnus before you left. My hubby didn't but I told him to find a medical facility and to get himself and his crews vaccinated.

Hi,

Just finished grocery shopping - will buy bread and fruit tomorrow so it's FRESH...

Grocery stores are jammed - out of certain foods - no gas cans - it's crazy.

I've got the powdered milk, the chocolate, the breakfast bars - thanks!!!

Thanks for the heads up on the highways - I'll keep checking - I'm getting conflicting reports and have some alternates just in case...

I went to LA after hurricane Andrew and more than likely will go again this time to take supplies to a shelter.

I am so happy you can go and help and have you in my prayers.Bless you and all the wonderful forum members for their support.

Just a word of caution: Even though you feel the need for protection ,

You can be arrested for carrying a concealed weapon (we were advised not to do so)Law enforcement will be overly cautious at this time.

Criminals can take it away from you and use it on YOU!You have to make the decision but thought I might pass this on.

If you can get in touch with a local ,government agency and get permission first ,it will save a lot of time and head=ahes.

As I said:

I HAVE BEEN THERE! DONE THAT

and planning is crucial!!!

I don't know Ann-- but one thing I would find very comforting at a time like this is the BIBLE.

May God Bless you and keep you and yours SAFE!

No NO NO NO NO...not a concealed weapon. I think we were all talking things like, mace, pepper spray, a tire iron or big heavy stick.

And as for concealed weapons, the key word there is "concealed" think about it. My friends on the force have told me that more than once.

Yes, no concealed weapons.

A gun sitting on the dash will help avoid a situation where you might need to use it.

Hi Guys,

I understand about the concealed weapon. I have a hammer in both cars.

We have decided NOT to stop for gas. We would only need to stop once on the way up and once on the way back - so we are taking our gas with us.

I know the roads we are taking are clear. That was my biggest worry.

We will take before and after photos if we can and I'll post them when we get back! I'm sure we'll have a story to tell.

Also, someone has volunteered to take ALL her horses out and bring them to my farm if she wishes to come. If she is going to be out of electricity for a long period of time, she can't do business or sell horses. That option is open to her.

I guess it all hinges on how long that area will be without power. It's just so hard to know at this time.

Her farm is hidden and very rural, so I'm not worried about us getting robbed.

Thanks for your suggestions and help!

I am in KY but would be willing to temporarily house displaced animals and/or their owners. We are about 9 hrs from NOLA.

If I can be of any help in that regard feel free to pm me.

Bless you for what you are doing.

Be safe and send our good thoughts and wishes for a fast recovery for your friends.

Monette,

I think I talked with you this week more than my own husband.. LOL.. that is okay, you are funnier to talk to anyway.. I have to agree and told ya before you all need to get a tetnaus shot.. So should the horses.. Do you have like a Tractor Supply etc near you. I can call them and pay for tetnaus shots for the horses and you can give them while you are down there. Ann has been pretty much my best friend in the last 3 years. She went thru Jeremy's trip's to Iraq with me, there for me every single day.

Oh, don't forget the razor for Ann. LOL.. Tell her I love her, and she knows she is welcome to come up here. She needs to be waited on, but NO BOILED PEANUTS.. Thank god I am allergic. LOL

IF someone takes the horses to your house. She needs to get out of there too.

Lara,

Yes, on the bright side of this story - I have met some phenominal people and made many new mini friends. I hope I get to meet many of you at World this year!

I'm going to try to convince her to let us come back and pick her and her horses up - but you KNOW Ann - she is as stubborn as they come. I just know how HOT it is without a/c - and no toilet - no shower - limited food you can eat - cut off from the world - it's just HORRIBLE!

I know she would never leave her horses, but if they ALL came with her...well, just be smart. But I don't know where Aaron, her daughter is either. Just so many questions and no way of ASKING until I get there.

And YES - we will try to find some BOILED PEANUTS on the way down (yuck) - HaHa!!!
