I have always heard that after gelding you were supposed to keep the horse separated from the mares for three to four weeks. My vet told me one week. He said that the three weeks was the entire healing time. So then what about all the stories about mares being bred and catching two and three weeks later - old farmer's tales?

I had a woman here just two days ago that went on about a horse being bred after the second week. I'm confused.

Well, it mostly depends on how old your stallion was at the time of gelding. I've seen yearlings and two year olds that could be put out almost immediately, and I've also seen mature stallions (7-8) that couldn't be put in with a herd for almost 6 months because they were still "studdy" and wanting to whip everything in sight. As for breeding the mares, I always heard it was around 3 weeks, but I really don't know for sure.
