Here is the news story from our local paper (I think it's cool the doggie stayed w/them and was protecting them right up til the end. Our woods are full of Cougar, Bear and large coyotes):

Missing boys found safe after night in the woods

Searchers find pair – with family dog – after more than 24 hours of family anguish

By TOM BENNETT

The Daily Astorian

Two young boys whose disappearance sparked a major search in the forested hillsides south of Astoria were found safe and sound Tuesday.

Ethan Martin, 4, and brother Atticus Martin, 5, of southeast Portland were discovered by two searchers at about noon walking along an isolated logging road more than three miles from where they were last seen Monday morning.

The boys were reported to be in good condition despite spending the night outdoors, but were taken to Columbia Memorial Hospital for observation.

The children's parents, Christopher and Dawn Martin, reported the boys missing Monday afternoon after they wandered away from their family's vacation home on Lillenas Road, about 11 miles south of Astoria off Oregon Highway 202.

The Clatsop County Sheriff's Office activated its search-and-rescue and high-angle-rescue teams, and brought in additional help from local fire departments, as well as canine search teams from the Willamette Valley to comb the steep, thickly wooded hillsides surrounding the property. A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter also performed flyovers of the search area.

The search was resumed this morning with teams from Multnomah, Yamhill and Washington counties, who expanded the search beyond the two-square-mile section combed on Monday. A total of about 90 personnel participated in the mission.

Just before noon, two members of the county SAR team, Thomas Phillips and Amy Lenz, were driving down a logging road off Palmer Mainline when they saw the two boys walking down the road. Phillips said the boys were "a little cold, tired and hungry," but otherwise in good condition and spirits.

"I was a little bit shocked" to find the children walking along the road, he said.

The boys apparently stuck mostly to roads and trails during the more than 24 hours they were gone. They told Phillips and Lenz that they had slept on a dirt trail during the night, but didn't give many other details about their adventure.

The boys were accompanied by the family dog, a 10-month-old Labrador, which at first was hostile toward the two searchers until they picked up the boys, Lenz said.

Media were kept away from the house during the search. After the boys' reunion, the family issued a statement through Clatsop County Public Information officer Andrea Kennet, expressing their thanks to the searchers and for those who prayed for the boys' safe return.

"Christopher (Martin) said this was an amazing team, and they were good at keeping the family informed, and keeping us calm," she said.
