National Drive in Kentucky

I'm somewhat of a newbie to the driving world and was considering attempting to go to the National Drive in October this year. It's in Kentucky - quite a drive for me. (About 6 hours) So, I thought I'd ask on here as to whether anyone has gone in years past and if so - what was it like? Is it something that is worth the time, trouble and expense? Anything you can tell me about it would be great.
