Interesting about the author... she spent 7 years and many sources on research before that book. Here is a comment regarding that.

This book was seven years in the making, from the time she filed a courageous lawsuit against one of the largest manufacturers of pet food in North America, until the first publishing of "Food Pets Die For. She lost that lawsuit, which alleged that toxic amounts of minerals in her dogs' food was responsible for serious illness, however the evidence she has collected since that time makes one wonder.

The book's chapters include information on the possibility of Mad Cow Disease in North America (and how it could relate to pet food); a comprehensive section on the legal sources of meat, carbohydrates and fiber used in pet food; hidden hazards in pet foods (did you know that rendering does not effectively degrade antibiotics and other drugs found in meat source, including phenobarbitol used to euthanize pets?); and a discussion of the seriously inadequate laws governing the manufacture of pet foods.

The book is in at least it's 3rd edition, so obviously the slander suit didnt go well (I could not find any information on one) as the book is still being published.

Another more recent comment:

Once again, Martin goes behind the scenes of the commercial pet food industry to expose the hidden and unsavory ingredients in most bags and cans of pet food. As of 2008, Martin still identifies euthanized cats and dogs as a legal protein source for use in commercial pet food. In addition, Martin unravels the latest mystery ingredients listed on pet food labels, the deceptive practices for labeling ingredients, and the problem with many overseas food sources, such as those imported from China. Once Martin identifies the problems with most pet foods she offers answers for consumers asking "What is a safe food to feed my dog or cat?"

Ann Martin is internationally recognized as an authority on the commercial pet food controversy. Since 1990, Martin has investigated and questioned exactly what goes into most commercial pet food and continues to discover more unsavory practices of the pet food industry.

The first edition of Food Pets Die For: Shocking Facts About Pet Food, published in 1997, was the first book to expose the hazards of commercial pet food. Ms. Martin's investigative reporting was selected for special recognition as "one of the most censored news stories of 1997" by Sonoma State University's Project Censored, which focuses on important news events that are largely ignored by mainstream media. Since then, she has been on numerous television and radio shows internationally, and her book has been translated into Japanese. Ms. Martin was also a columnist for Better Nutrition magazine for four years. In her second book, Protect Your Pet: More Shocking Facts, Ms. Martin continues her investigation of commercial pet food as well as other controversial, pet-related issues.

Ms. Martin graduated with a B.A. in business from the University of Western Ontario, and worked in a tax office for several years. She lives with her family in Ontario, Canada, where she continues to question, research, and write about pet-related issues.

The Animal Protection Institute of America has also investigated the commercial pet food industry, and has reached conclusions similar to Martin's. Regarding Martin's findings, Executive Director of API, Alan Berger, states, "Martin carefully and methodically reveals in great detail the serious problem with the ingredients present in commercial pet food. Even more amazing is that this is an industry that is almost completely unregulated. Martin is to be congratulated and thanked for her tenacity in taking on an industry with $20 billion in worldwide revenues."

Here's another article written by another regarding what is allowed to go into rendered products and what happens with it all.

I have searched the internet and do not find anything regarding any lawsuit to Ann Martin, and if the book was 'slanderous' and they won, it would be removed from production for sure.
