The Texas Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners has introduced an administrative rule that, if adopted, will hurt non-veterinarians’ ability to float horse teeth. The rule would allow non-veterinarian practitioners to float horses’ teeth with hand instruments, but require them to work under the direct on-site supervision of state-licensed veterinarians if they do the same procedures using power instruments. It would also require the supervising veterinarians to be held responsible by the TBVME for the standard of care provided by the non-veterinarian practitioners.

IT IS CRITICAL THAT YOU ATTEND THIS PUBLIC HEARING AND RALLY! STAND UP FOR YOUR RIGHT TO CHOOSE WHO WORKS ON YOUR HORSE IN TEXAS.

Will be there with bells on.

I am really anxious to hear how this went today. Dont live in TX but use Carl and this affects us ALL! It will set precendent for every other state to follow!

It's not over by a longshot, but my personal feeling is that there is progress. The vet board was well represented today, lots of vets who stood up to speak but also quite a few horse owners and well known individuals like Charmayne James on our side. I think - and this is just my take after attending a number of these hearings - that there was a feeling today for the first time that there will be a compromise of some kind. Several people on both sides of the issue spoke for some kind of certification process - something that might satisfy both sides and give the public some protection from untrained individuals wanting to take shortcuts. It was a full room today with lots of concerned individuals on both sides. My old vet - who I still consider a friend - and several other vets I've used, were sitting all around me so it was interesting to say the least LOL. Dr Putnam, the official show vet for our World and many others at Will Rogers, was there once again speaking vehemently against the dental techs. It is my understanding that he will no longer be the vet for AMHA World.

Thank you so much for the update Jan!! Wish I could have been there!

Certification would be fine I guess but I hope they are not expecting these folks to stop work until they figure something out! I know the Mini world is already seeing a bit of backlash recently because the King (ha, Carl) is tied up in court instead of being able to attend to horses who need his care.
