I do a fair amount of trick-horse trainer, have taught many clinics over the years. I like the clicker - although not all horses take to it. My stallion loves it. There's no amount of "good boy" and pats on the neck I can give him that equal to a click with the clicker. I like the target stick too, but I've found that a piece of plastic bag or something similar on the end of a dressage whip works just as well. The key idea there is that they target away from your body. Small pilons on the end of a stick are also effective, and they work well to move into a send-to target. You may also want to get longer lead ropes to work farther away from the littles. Depending on what behaviors you want to get them conditioned to, eventually you may want to move into a single hobble - which is for helping learn bow and lay down.
Personally, I really like to have a surcingle on hand for teaching long lining to my youngsters and littles. Naturally long lines (reins) and a good dressage whip, not for being rude, but just to articulate or punctuate - an extension to my arm. Keeps my head out of harm's way...
I'm really excited for you! I love your enthusiasm! Keep sharing!!!
