As I was making morning coffee, I took a long whiff and thought..."that smells sooooo good". Well, that got me thinking about my favorite smells and I was wondering about yours.

Other than coffee, mine include:

A freshly washed earth after a spring shower;

Sheets after they've been hung outside to dry (love crawling between them that first night)

Vanilla,

Cinnamon,

baking bread - or even better, baking (yeasty) cinnamon rolls,

Lilacs,

Honeysuckle,

Gardenias and Jasmin (sure miss the bushes I had in Florida....but I have Lilacs now and honeysuckle now)

Freshly mown hay,

Puppy breath,

And - of course - the wonderful smell of horses.

Anybody want to share their favorites???

Oh so many.

Yes definitely the wet earthy smell after a spring or summer rain

Sweet peas

a barn full of fresh hay

turkey slow roasting (or any slow roast)

the smell of a newborn baby snuggled up to you

cinnamon anything

bacon frying

fresh ground coffee

sheets dried in the sun

and absolutely horses! I remember going home from my riding lessons as a teen, and I wouldn't wash my hands for hours, I would keep smelling them to smell the horses.

Leather...who couldn't love the smell of leather. Everytime that I walk into our tack room or anyother place that has alot of leather in it, I take the deepest breath of it as possible. I also like the smell of rain, before and after, everything is so fresh. Plumeria has to be my favorite flower smell. Cedar and Pine are another two of my favorites. And of course like everyone else...horses (unless they just rolled in mud or poo, lol).

I was just thinking about this the other day too!

I love the smell of freesia flowers the most but also lavender and rosemary, it reminds me of my grandma

wood smoke on a crisp fall day

baby roses

turkey cooking

Clinique Aromatics Elixer

horses of course

I used to love the way gasoline smelled when I was a kid before the additives that made it reek. The smell of barbque which I later found out was more because of the fluid than the briquettes. I think some smells yu grow to like because of the pleasant memories that come when you smell them. To others, the same things may be totally noxious.

Shirley -- that is funny about the smell of gasoline! I also used to love that smell when I was a kid and had thought when doing my list how I used to like it but not anymore. I just thought I "outgrew" liking how it smelled. I didn't know the smell of it had truly changed! One of my clients is a retired high level executive from Exxon. I will ask him about it when I see him next because he loves to talk

I am a nut about smells. A friend several years ago told me I should be one of those wine tasters or people that get paid to test scents and tastes for a living b/c I was so "picky" or just that I noticed things others didn't. I can often tell when a mare is in heat as there is a distinctive smell in the air around the barn and pasture, sort of similar to the smell of the inside of a 35 mm film canister (NOT just the pee smell. *LOL*)

I love a LOT of scents, some of my favorites have to do with people and their individual smells (I wrote a blog about this once. *LOL* THAT is how crazy I am):

Nothing can match the smell of each of my babies when they were newborns,

The smell of the river (one of my favorite people in the world always smells like a clean river, no matter what),

the smell in the air of wet concrete/rain in the summer after its been dry a while,

diesel (yep, I'm wierd that way, just have a lot of great associations w/this smell, burnt and unburnt),

Freshly mown grass,

brand-new baby foal and the way the barn smells when there is a new foal in there,

pine shavings, cedar shavings, fresh bedding/clean barn,

the ocean,

the forest when its dry out, it's almost like unburnt incense, but much sweeter,

in the dunes in Summer, it smells like freshly ripened wild strawberries (b/c lots of them grow there in the dunes),

honeysuckle,

fresh, clean, good hay,

clean cars (another odd one, but it's hard to describe!),

leather/feed store,

cotton that's been hanging out in the sunshine to dry,

sheets that have been bleached and then dried,

baking bread/cinnamon rolls,

cardamom, rosemary,

steeping tea, esp. jasmine and/or any aromatic ones,

horses,

show sheen,

a dry, mown meadow/hay field,

chocolate!,

Flying Fox from Lush,

alder smoke, or beach pines being burnt (can smell the salt or ocean in them, it's a unique smell to the beach usually winter/spring/fall, and Summer when people have campfires on the beach),

His cologne if he wears any, mostly cuz when HE wears it, it smells unique and different, not like it does out of the bottle.

The smell of a clean swimming pool outdoors (I kind of like the smell of chlorine)

Sheesh, I could go on and on and on....

Interesting thread!

Wow - I'm sure I could sit here for hours and think on this topic, but I'll just rattle off a couple that quickly come to my mind:

the freshness in the air after a rain

fresh cut grass

jasmine flowers

and, of course, horses and the good ol' country air!

Jill, I happenend to mention that to my hubby and asked him if he remembered gas smelling good. He said yes and the reason he said was that it contained lead. I would love to hear what your EXXON guy says about it.
