Best feed to make a 5-year-old mini mare gain weight?

Coming out of winter, both my miniature mares need to gain a bit of weight, but one in particular needs to. My 31" paint has a skinny neck and a big belly with not a very good topline. She's always been harder to keep good weight on than my other mini and I just wanted to ask your opinions on...

My 3-year-old mare has a very skinny neck and hay belly/no topline...

My little 3-year-old mare has a very skinny neck and a really poor topline (very bony back and no muscle on the topline), and below her skinny backbone is her hay belly. I was wondering what I can do (if anything) to make her neck a bit thicker because right now it's pencil-thin, decrease the...

    Miniature horse pasture size?

Just curious...how big is the pen that you keep your miniature horse/s in, and how many minis live in that pen? Do you think a 65 x 80 ft dirt pen is big enough for two or three minis (that cannot be on grass hardly at all)?

One of my minis has a big belly.

I have a small yearling mini and she has a big belly that drops down. Our other mini is fine...it's just the one that is significant. I feed them the recommended amount of Purina Equine Junior per day, as well as free choice high quality hay. They get a salt block and plenty of fresh water. What...

What would be more stressful to my minis on this extremely hot day?

I'm torn on what to do here. The flies have just started getting worse with the horses for the first time this year, and I was thinking of putting flymasks on them. I know it has to be somewhat annoying to have flies on your face all day, but would it be equally as distressing, if not more, to...

It's 97 degrees here and my minis live outside 24/7.

I went outside to my minis today and they're sweating in this awful heat and humidity. They have full water, but I still feel like an awful horse mom, seeing as though they live outside all the time and can't escape the heat. How do I help them beat the heat and stay hydrated? Should I get them...

Gnat outbreak...is anyone else experiencing this!?

It's been rainy and very muggy where I live, and every day when I go out to my horses' pasture, CLOUDS of tiny black bugs (I'm assuming gnats) fly up off the ground. They're on plants by the pasture, on the fence rails, and on all the damp ground in the pasture. The problem is, it is SO damp...

Have any of you ever bought young minis that were not "tame" or worked with yet?

I'm wondering if any of you have had any experience with getting either yearlings, two-year-olds, or three-year-olds and not having them be "tame", used to people, and/or worked with. How did you deal with this, and how did you get the minis so that they were friendly and receptive towards people?

    Any alternatives to horse clippers?

Hello all! My minis have not had much training as of now and have never been introduced to clippers. I don't feel that at this point they're quite ready to be introduced to them...we still have quite a bit to do before we're at that point. Plus, I don't even have a working set. My issue is that...

Equine Junior - how much do you feed your yearlings?

I'm having a little trouble figuring out how much Equine Junior to feed my two yearlings. I was checking on the bag and they had instructions for feeding when you don't feed any roughage, which I do. They suggested 11 pounds, which seems like way too much if I'm feeding hay as well! How much do...

How gradually do I ease my yearlings onto grain for their first time?

I will be starting my yearlings on Equine Junior for the first time. They've never had grain before -- just hay and pasture grass. I want to make sure I build up their grain intake very slowly so they don't get sick. My question is...how slowly do I introduce them to the grain and build up from...

What color is this little guy?

I found this little baby at a farm today! He's a month old...he's just the friendliest and cutest colt. I was wondering about his color...I would say really light bay, except he has that silvery tail, not quite black mane with some lighter accents, faint dorsal stripe, and he's almost off-white...

Teaching a yearling mini to lead...

I have a yearling mini that needs to be taught how to lead. I've never taught one to lead before, and I was wondering what to do. She's completely fine with the halter being put on and removed...she stands perfectly. Beyond that, however...I just don't know what the most effective way to teach...

Advice on feeding program for my two minis.

I'm really starting to second guess my feeding program for my two mini yearlings. I got them six months ago and they're my first minis. They don't show or anything -- all they really do is hang out in the pasture, play with the kids, and look cute As they're starting to lose their winter hair...
