For the last week or so, my mare has had a thick yellow discharge coming from the right eye. At first I just thought she had gotten something in her eye, as the pasture she is on has tall grass. But now, I am not so sure. The right side of her face appears slightly swollen as well.

I am calling the vet tomorrow. In the meantime, any ideas what could be going on? I am really worried about her.

Our 11 yr old mare had something similar last summer. The vet checked to be sure there wasn't any cornea scratches or ulcers. Upon finding none, he diagnosed it as conjuctivitis (pink eye?) and gave us ointment to apply 2x daily. It cleared up very quickly although though she fought us like crazy to get the ointment applied.
