Hi, I was wondering who all here comes from Ontario and if anyone was anywhere near Borden (Barrie)? I'll be moving up there in the spring, my husband is there already and I was just wondering what the area was like and who all I might be able to visit with while I am there. I'm planning a trip to see him In February and should be moving out myself in May.

Thanks!

Melanie

Hey there you old married woman you!!

It has been a long time since I was up there, but the Barrie I remember was a nice little "city". I can imagine it has grown like crazy since...has it really BEEN that long ago?

Are you taking the critters?

The boys are going to stay put in Belnan with the Hinsons until we get settled somewhere. Gerrys first course is only 9 months and after that he may or may not be poasted back to Borden. It is likely he will do a short course (4 months ish) on another base and then be back to Borden, in which case I'd be staying put and we will look for a place for the boys sooner. But if it looks like we will be posted away from Borden after 9 months than we will wait till we get a longer posting to move them. They have a great home with the Hinsons and they really love the boys so I'm happy with the arrangements, though I will miss them terribly.

Hi Melanie.

I live a couple hours south of Barrie, but I think there are others on here who live much closer. Barrie is a great location in that it's the gateway to "cottage country" with a zillion lakes and all the associated fun on your doorstep. There are several ski resorts in the area, too. It's also only about an hour north of Toronto, should the big city be of any interest to you. I bet if you googled Barrie, you'd get more information than you could ever want. :)

If you're bringing your minis, you'll be within easy access of several shows over the summer and fall - some AMHR and several fairs. There's also the Miniature Horse Club of Ontario that puts on a series of point shows, clinics, fun days, etc. If you check out their Calendar page, you'll get some idea of how many shows are available (although it hasn't been updated with hardly any accurate information for this year yet).

The Barrie area is certainly very different from your lovely Nova Scotia, but definitely beautiful in its own right. I hope you and husband will be happy here!

I'm a good couple hours out of Barrie too, but I do get up around the CFB Borden area 3 or 4 times a year. I have a good friend (another dog breeder & ex professional handler) who lives near New Lowell. I love the area.....especially Creemore (they have *the* best brewery there too....mmmm....Creemore

). Not soo fond of driving those roads at this time of year though

I actually kinda got lost going up there once....thought I knew better than the GPS, and ended up on a lot of back roads trying to get around CFB Borden.....I decided after that, the GPS did know what it was talking about

I haven't been to Barrie in many, many years......but the surrounding area sure is gorgeous.

We are 107 miles south of Borden. Go to the Miniature Horse Club of Ontario web site and check out the breeders page.

February could be tricky travelling too far due to the lovely winters we have.

It certainly has been a mild winter though, so far

You would be welcome to visit Nixons Hill Farm if you are able.

Hi,

We are from Barrie. Still have lots of family there.

We live about a hour and half North of Barrie.

Angus is not far from Barrie.

You will like it. Lots to do.

I'm in the west end Toronto about 1 hour from Barrie stright up the highway. My brother lives in Moonstone about 1/2 hour north of Barrie and we trek up that way visiting and usually go up other times to the casino in Orillia (about 20 min from Barrie) I like Barrie and Orillia and there is lots to do around there. Most are pretty friendly in that neck of the woods. If you ever want to check out Toronto just let me know.

Hi Melanie, We are located about an hour and a half southwest of Barrie, so if you want a horse fix you would be more than welcome to come to our farm. My contact info is listed on the Miniature Horse club of Ontario web site. The name of the farm is Foxgold Farm & Kennel.

Hoping to see you

Yvonne

Thanks everyone. I've learned a bit about the area in the past few days and I didn't realize how far Barrie actually is from Borden

You have to be carefull who you listen to I guess. lol (we were told that Borden is in Barrie.... hahaha Borden is HUGE I wouldn't consider anything that large to be IN anything) Angus and Alliston are actually places I'm likely to see a lot more of and possibly even live in. Does anybody know much about those areas? We aren't sure what the availability of military housing is going to be in Borden so I'm looking into the cost of apartments (yearly and temporary) now. If anyone has any advice I would be glad to have it. Also, job market would be of interest to me. I wouldn't mind finding something to work at to keep myself busy while he is busy with work and courses.

If you live in Alliston you would be about an hour from me. The job market in Ontario is pretty bleak right now but if you are prepared to do anything, you will find a job, say Tim Hortons or McDonalds. I don't know much about Angus except I drive thriugh it when I am going to Barrie to visit my clients

I will pm you my telephone number and my email.

Both Angus and Alliston are nice towns. If you like carriage driving there is lots of it in the area with COPDA - Central Ontario Pleasure Driving Association, they have a website you can google. There are a few Minis in the club! I am a bit south of there - south of Hamilton - but get up to the area fairly frequently trimming feet.

The MHCO Collingwood Fair show is fairly close to there and so are the Meaford and Owen Sound Miniature Horse Fair shows. There are a fair number of Miniature Horse owners close by as well - you won't be lonely!
