I'm pretty sure my yearling stallion is a smokey black, so I'm going to have him tested for the creme gene but I want some second opinions on his coloring and if I should test for anything else. He also has some weird spotting on his leg, do you think it could be sabino? He has one blue eye (left eye) as well.

His dam is a palomino (Soats lil' Spun Sand) and his sire is a smokey black tobiano (Houck's Mr GG's Grande Finale).

Here are some pictures of Kinson from foal to yearling, and a close up of his leg spots.

This was after his first clip, at about 4 months old. He was a chocolately brown-black

This is him now, photo taken just a week or so ago. His mane and tail are sunbleached a bit, that much I do know.

Lastly, here's the spotting on his leg. There a few spots on the other side of the knee too.

Thanks for any help/input!

I am pretty sure there is no Tobiano there, as the white rarely disappears from the legs, and Tobi does not carry face white.

BUT it does do this in LWO.

So, test for Tobi by all means, but please also test for LWO.

And Cream.

The Sabino test?

I would save my money, were I you!

It only tests for one sort and a neg. result will not mean you do not have Sabino.

Thanks for the suggestions/help!

Never thought of testing for LWO, but I'll make sure to do it! I'm on the fence about testing for tobiano, as I'm not sure that he has it, especially if it doesn't cause face white. I read up more on the sabino testing, so I'll skip that test for now. And, of course, I'll test for the cream.

What about black or agouti? I don't think its possible for him to be homozygous black because his dam was a palomino?

That is the same kind of spot that my Dusty had last year. Then when I clipped his leg to find the spots again for his registration papers this is what I found.

So because he is a silver I was told that that spot that looked just like yours in the summer and this picture in the winter was because he is a silver dapple. But your picture is what it looked like in the summer. I guess we will see this summer.

His dam appears silver so how would this affect his color genes? Interesting spots, LOL

You are right, he cannot be homozygous black (2 copies of the black gene) as his dam is Palomino & doesn't carry the black gene.

As far as the white spots go, they are probably connect to whatever pinto gene is causing his facial white...Sabino or Frame (LWO).

There is such as thing as "birdcatcher spots" that resemble those on his leg. But you don't usually see them in that location.
