we have only about an acre we can keep all the horses off of for the winter, and we planted it in annual ryegrass and oats for the winter. (our soil is mostly sand, so even out from under the shade of the trees, the horses tear it up enough that real grass can't grow year-round.)

this way, we have some fresh greens for the milking mares, for about an hour or so at a time.

we spent a good part of last weekend sitting out there watching the babies play.

On Saturday, Teri started pacing out there, and we thought she'd just pick a spot and have her filly outside in the sunshine and grass. well she kept walking, obviously having some contractions, and literally quirting milk as she moved. twice she lay down and made like she was going to push, the hopped back up.

I really do think maiden mares put off birthing caise the discomfort scares them until it's too late. she kept it up til after 8:30 after they had been put up in the foaling pen, then finally went down and her water broke. First hoof to show was upside down! we literally pulled her at a walk inside, and while she was walking the foot slipped back in. I was able to feel both feet and the head, but it was tight, even tho the foal was now right side up, she still wanted to go up toward the rectum instead of coming over the pelvic wall.

by this time, i was sitting with Teri's behind in my lap, had to pull and guide the foal in the right direction.

David was not supposed to be helping with his back out, so he wasn't allowed to do anything but hold her lead rope. finally pulled baby into my lap, and far enough out to know everything was going to be ok. I don't know how long she might have gone if we hadn't been there, but by 20 after 9 we were all in good shape, eating and running and everything.

with most of the area around us planted in bermuda, where there is grass, the bright green field attracts quite a bit of attention. it also attracts the neighborhood kids, and we seem to have acquired a barn helper.

so far, her chores have mostly been to help us brush and pet the foals.
