We don't believe in lunging a yearling on halter at all but have a large oblong pen we free lunge in for a short period of time a few times a week but thats more for voice commands then exercise.

IMO Don't lunge at all! you should only show a yearling in halter.. so practice walk/trot on a lead & setting up. Lunge at 3 yrs old. if you wanna get some mucle on him/her, do it the hard way & walk, walk walk! walk up hills, on roads in feilds! make it like your dog! try this, i have a filly & i have to do this to! lol your not allone!
