, anyone have a quick fix or had the surgery? thanks. Peg

A rotator cuff injury is right in the shoulder joint, so it shouldn't be causing you pain in your neck or down your arm, IMO. I have a rotator cuff injury from my old job.... I suggest you have your doctor look at it and see what else may be wrong, in addition to your older injury. And hope that you will be feeling better quick!!

I didn't have surgery, but when I tore mine, I got a shot of cordizone (oh lordy it did hurt

but others I have talked to said it didn't hurt them bad, guess I'm just a weenie

) and tried not to use it too much and it took care of itself. If the shot hadn't of worked (didn't want to keep getting shots) I would have looked into surgery.

Good luck

Pam

You need an MRI of your neck and shoulder.

That being said, if it is only a rotator cuff tear, and not something else going on in your neck, the only way to repair it is surgery.

Small tears will sometimes go unrepaired and you can manage to do without surgery. But if it is hurting you still, your only option is surgery and these are not repairable through the scope.....has to be an open incision.

A friend of mine at work just had her second one done a few weeks ago. She could vertually do nothing with out the sugery. AFter some reabilitation and surgery she is back to normal.

I had surgery one year ago on December 28, and I had a full tear as well as a bone spur on my right side. It was very painful and yes you should get an MRI and investigate to find a good Doctor. The Doctor I had was wonderful and I can't say enough good about him. I have gotten back almost the complete use of my shoulder I still am leery of doing certain things but that's just me. Good Luck.

Hi Peg,

I started with a problem back in September and after having it injected with cortisone twice and it not helping , had an MRI. I have 2 bone spurs and a torn tendon that I have to have repaired next week. It is very painful and I am told I won't be pain free unless I do the surgery and the PT--not looking forward to it all, but it has to be done since the pain is at the point I will do anything to get rid of it. They told me I need 8 weeks to return to normal activities!!!!

I have the pain down my arm and my docs tell me it is not uncommon for this condition. I just want it all to go away---hopefully, this will do what they said it will and it will be better in a couple months....wish me luck, surgery is Jan 3rd.

You may have the same problem with the pain going to your arm...the best thing to do is tell your surgeon and let him get the tests done you need...good luck to you too.

thanks everyone for the advice.

Six Gems, Good luck on your surgery, I'll keep you in my thoughts that everything turns out ok. If you can after your surgery let me know how it went.

I just got back from the Drs. got a shot of toradol, he said its my cup, I talked myself & him out of getting a shot in my shoulder today I'm such a baby

, but come friday if there's no change then I have to get it. He said the reason for the pain in my neck & going down my arm is I'm getting frozen shoulder due to the pain I'm holding it stiff and not using it, so I'm doing more harm then good. So it looks like sometime in the future I'll have to get surgery, but I have to another MRI done, last one is 5 years old. So thanks again. Peg

My dad has had both shoulders repaired and both were bad tears. He was out of commission for 8 weeks with each. He did them 2 years apart. You need to check for a specialist for this as there are many that will do this operation but there are a few everywhere that do only this surgery. Not to disrespect any or the Drs. out there but there is a difference if one does 2-300 per year and someone who does 10-20. Keep up with the theropy and you likely will be good as new and pain free.

Good Luck

Mark

HI

I had an acute traumatic tear of my rotator cuff in 94, kept putting off surgery, doing PT for over 2 yrs, kept getting worse - hurt from my rt ear to my fingertips...

Finally went to a specialist and had surgery in 97

Depending on the severity of the tear, it may heal with rest and PT or require minor surgery or major surgery...

The rotator cuff is made up of the tendons that attach the muscles to the bones - if you leave the tear unattended, these muscles may atrophy and make repair more difficult or even impossible.

MRI or a good ultrasound will help differentiate severity.

Cortisone injections are strictly for the pain - they actually interfer with healing and increase your chance of tendon rupture...

BTW - my shoulder still hurts every day but at least my arm is usable - went from 70% disabled to 25%

Ice rather than heat!!!! I know the heat feels good, but the ice takes down the swelling and inflamation better according to my doc... I have torn one too.

My mom had the surgery and after physical therapy, she has total use of her arm again. Good luck to you!
