I'm scheduled for parathyroid surgery this month in Tampa...just wondered if anyone has been through it, and if so where. These guys are specialists, it's all they do, they do a lot of it and apparently quite well. Have talked to lots of folks through the internet who have been/are going, but no one I really know. Surgery itself is minimally invasive, 15-20 minutes - some downtime/recovery involved of course, more than they tell you on their website.

We are going a couple of days early & make a short vacation of it, haven't been in that area in years and I remember it's beautiful.

One thing about Florida they have a lot of very good doctors and hospitals! I'm sure you will be in very good hands and what a place to re-coop. You'll love it. Grab a good ole QH show while you are there and take yourself a nice recovery on the topless beach and enjoy!

Jan, my grandmother had this surgery done decades ago and she did fine afterwards.

I'm going to be in Florida (Sarasota) on June 1-2... just long enough for a business meeting.

I have a very good friend who although didn't have parathyroid surgery per say, her parathyroid was removed. She went for thyroid surgery, and the doctor, who had done it successfully how ever many times, also managed to take her parathyroid. She had numerous complications following the surgery, and she had continued to have complications because of the surgery which was done over 10 years ago. (and she since found out that this well known and respected doctor quit doing surgeries not long after hers........) Her biggest problem was not being able to use calcium because her parathyroid was removed and having to constantly have blood tests to measure her calcium levels. It would spike really, really high, then go dangerously low for no apparent reason.

Though, yes, for the most part this surgery can go with no complications, I just wanted you to be aware that it isn't without risks, just like anything.

I hope your surgery goes smoothly and that you do not end up with these complications!!

Anoki, thanks for the info. I chose this dr (over objections of family who don't really see why I need to go out of state for this lol) because he is a specialist and actually is the originator of this particular surgery in the 90's. Surely hope he comes through for me, as I don't go under the knife lightly. I've been on a site devoted to this and while there can certainly be complications, most come through it well with an improved quality of life. I could have a similar surgery done locally by a very good doc, but just seems logical to go to what seems to be the best, if I can.

I had parathyroid surgery several years ago, locally in MI. Outpatient, simply done, healed easily, back to work in a couple of days. PM me and I'd be happy to fill you in!
