You didn't mention if this was a year-round issue or not. At this time of year breeding age stallions that aren't breeding but think they should be will pace - especially if there are mares around and other stallions!

We have two stallions in with mares - one is a bit thin but has a compact build overall - he's dropped some weight from breeding but I see that with stallions here usually in the first 3-4 weeks in with mares. The other is fine. We have a third stallion that is digging a trench in his pen pacing and he's in a largish pen (20x100) as he's not in with mares but really thinks he should be!

The rest of the boys are on their summer pasture (20 acres of hills) and we have no pacing issues from them. The one that is 'confined is a fence jumper so we can't keep him with the rest of the off duty guys!

The 'pacer' eats 2 flakes (5" thick) of alfalfa 2x a day and is thin - not ribby but thinner than I'd like to see him - its just that time of year though!
