One of our maiden mares that foaled this year is driving me crazy. She controls her foal with every move. He of course wants to play and his mother of course doesn't want him to play. I wanted to rebreed her but she is terrible about this too. Acts like a crazed lady even if the foal is on the other side of the fence.

We had 2 maiden mares go within a week of each other. The other is wonderful .. Takes care of her foal but allows him to play with other horses. Gives him a little freedom to be a kid.

The first mare I can't put in with anybody as she is mean to protect her baby.

What do you do with mares like this. Will see ever take a rebreeding this year?

Thanks

She'll probably just need time, she'll loosen up and settle down. Some mares are just more protective than others.

We have a mare like that...it is just her and we deal with it. When we want to work with her foal we catch her with grain and then keep her on a lead. She has been this way with all of her foals and as they get older she lets them go off more and play.
