I'd keep the furniture and just go into their place to pay with cash from now on. That way, you get a receipt from the person who takes the money. Of course, that only works if the business is local.
If you want proof of payment and are willing to go to the business I would write a check and get a receipt. That way you would have double proof.

If this business would have a problem honoring a cancelled check I doubt it would be any different with a receipt.
 
First - I'd never do business with them again.

Second - I'd bill them for your lawyer fees

Third - contact your local TV news folks and give them the low down.
