I am looking for fun show class ideas. Our local 4h group has been doing some fun shows locally. I am looking to kick it up a notch(so to speak). We currently do poles, barrels, walk race, musical stalls, and extreme versatility. We also do hunter and jumper. I would like to find some more fun games for people of all ages. Id love to get some new ideas. Thanks

Obstacle race: Walk/trot only. If you bypass an obstacle you get ten seconds added on to your time. Each time. Fastest horse rarely wins.... steady Eddie normally does!

Apple bob: run down, bob for your apple, run back. Can't touch the apple with your hands at all during your run.

Catalog race: announcer calls out a page number. Run down, find your page, tear it out, CLOSE THE BOOK, run back. It's hysterical hearing everyone yell CLOSE THE BOOK if the entrant forgets. Make sure you only pick odd page numbers so you don't double up a page. Use a fat Penneys or Sears catalog.

Walk/trot flag race: Go to first barrel, pick up flag, pass around cone at end of arena and place flag in bucket of sand on another barrel on the opposite side of the ring. Disqualified for more than three canter/gallop strides.

Egg and Spoon: balance a raw egg on a plastic spoon at all gaits. This gets really fun if you have one for lead animals, too. And add a jump....

I need an explanation for musical stalls and extreme versatility...they sounds like it could be fun! Our fun show has musical feed pans, egg and spoon (but we are having a tough time judging the winner there since some tend to cheat by holding on to the eggs with their thumbs!), obstacles (where we have the people do the hula hoop instead of having the horse do anything with it), barrel racing and jumping along with the typical halter and driving class. It would be nice to change it up a little with a few of the other classes suggested.

Easy solution - have them hold the egg and spoon via the mouth! We had the same problem and this eliminated it VERY easily!

we have a fun show up here in NH and one class that is hystrical is the Pup and Pony class. It's a trail class with one handler with a horse the other handler with a dog or goat(could be a sheep!!!), each "team" goes into the ring, horse first, dog following and does the trail course. It's real funny to see what the dogs are going to do or in the case of the goats, not do!!!!

Great ideas! Thankyou keep them coming.

The jumping in egg and spoon is great.

Musical stalls. One long pole in the middle(or however many are needed to make enough stalls) and then make stalls around the center pole in a u stall shape,by adding poles in the oppisite direction like making a box with no front, but having them side byside and back to back and one less than the number of horses. You play the music as in musical chairs, you lead the minis around the poles, but you can only move forward to a stall not back to a stall. There usually is a race for the empty stall. This was really fun, the last show we made it the parents class and it was great fun.

Extreme Obstacle. Has been different each time. We do the same course as the big horses and we are usually a little quicker than the big ones. There is at least 8-10 different obstacles and not your typical obstacles at HA or HR shows. Walking over a tarp( the big horse shy) over a foot bridge(sometimes with a jump in the middle of the bridge) trot through weaving poles. walk through 2 hanging hay net without the horses eating it (they all try for that bite)LOL. backing through hay bales in an L shape then jumpin over the bales, back up pulling a sled on the ground, pulling a plastic bag for a certain length, picking up a wind chime and putting down on the next barrel, pouring glasses of water with a pitcher and dumping it in a pail, cantering through ground poles, trotting through a box in one direction then cantering around through it in another direction with a flower box jump. opening and shutting gates. hula hoop toss over a cone and my all time favorite was golf, hitting the ball through to tires on the ground. Funny. Each horse had a one minute time limit on each obstacle before being asked to move on. The little guys were amazing they were hardly fazed by many of the things the big horses were scared to death of.

another great and funny one is Obstacle course where the handler does the obstacle course leading the horse..Too funny to watch the handler do a side pass and the horse be the "handler"....

Timed events:

clothes race: run down find a piece of clothes u were told to get put it on up and run back to start....

another twist to this is put the clothes on the horse instead of the human.

Tag Team: 2 people 2 horses .run to parnter tag partner then partner runs back to start

Resuce race: run to pick up a doll run back to start

Diaper race: run to doll, put on diaper ,run back to finsh

Ball N Bucket: SMALL bucket BIG ball,,,run to pick up ball go around cone drop ball in bucket run to finish

Lost N Found: Box fuula clothes. each person must find an item of clothes they are told and run back to finish

Coke Cola Race: Coke on bottle OPENED. eun to barrel grab bottle RUN back to start , one with the most coke wins

Non timed events:

Musical Buckests: one less bucket than entries, sit on bucket when music stops..smaller the bucket the funnier it gets.

Ball N Spoon: Tennis ball or golf ball on a spoon.Winner is last one with ball , must include a trot to determine winner.

Dollar on My rump: Must have a dollar to play.place dollar on ur horses rump, walk and trot winner is last one still holding money on their horses rump.. Winner gets ALL the money..Kids Love this game..fun to watch.make sure gates r closed lots of lose horses.LOL

Mini Hat Society: each person puts a hat on their horse NO ties on hats..Winner is the horse who still has its hat on after a trot.

Well hope tha helps u out.

Our club marks a black line one inch from the end. If you go beyond the line with your thumb you are disqualified- no excuses.
