GPS Vehicle Tracking (SPY) Unit

I want to have one of these units to put onto my personal vehicle so I can rest assured it is being used in a safe manner. These units record speed, locations, times, etc. I think the less expensive ones you plug into your computer to retrieve information. I don't want the one where you subscribe to a service for a monthly fee.

Have any of you had an experience with these you can talk about? What should I look for in a unit? Is any brand name better than another? Where is the best place to get one? And any other questions I forgot to ask.....
