*please excuse my typo in the title lol

I realized we do not have a proper horse first aid kit so with my Christmas money I will be putting a rubbermaid together with necessities.

I already have a thermometer, stethescope, vet wrap. We have alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, and petroleum jelly but I was wondering what else I need? I do not need any foaling things since we will not be getting into that for a couple more years.

Also, where can I get them for better prices? I figure I will put it all together myself instead of buying a kit because it will most likely be cheaper.

Thank you!

It's actually a good idea to have two kits. One for on the road, and one for in the

barn. I actually have three kits, because being a farrier I need one in my truck.

It's also a good idea to include stuff you might need for yourself. I know I have

been very thankful to have bandaids in the kit. I have thermometer, wraps,

stethoscope, betadine, furazone, blue cote, etc. Wonder Dust or blood stop

powder is an absolute necessity. I keep banamine and bute on hand. With the

banamine I have marked off the dosage and duct taped the syringe in case I am

not home and someone else has to administer it. [This way the syringe can't slip].

Duct tape rules the world. Mineral oil and a syringe, [baby oil can work in a pinch]

Clean towels, sanitary napkins [for the bottom of the foot in case of abcess], for

a larger horse I use diapers. I also keep my horse trailer handy just in case!

"Fred" (Linda B) added a lot of what we have!

Along with the mineral oil, to administer it's good to have either a 60cc syringe or even a kitchen gravy baster.

Human Saline Solution is helpful to flush out a horse's eyes.....

Thank you for your suggestions!

Can I get banimine someplace other than a vet's?

I plan on just making one and then bringing that to shows in our trailer.

What about bandages? Gauze? Ointment?

Banamine you have to get from the vet! Knowing the proper dosage is VERY

important. The vet can give you that information. Gauze you can get at the

drugstore along with bacitracin and most of the other supplies. I always keep a

kit in the barn because of the horses left at home. The vet can also give you

some suggestions for supplies. Linda B

4" by 4" sterile bandage squares.

Couple roles of brown guaze, 4" wide.

Elastakon tape, 3" or 4" wide.

Alluspray

Baby wipes- to clean off your hands after you've done bandage work.

Bandage scissors. Much safer than regular scissors.

Ditto the saline solution, it will flush out any wound.

Examine gloves or gloves in the painting section of Walmart. Again, the keep your hands tider so you can answer that cell phone when Doc returns your call!
