I have an obese mare here...I THOUGHT she was in foal until I had her scanned yesterday ( she should have been 330 days.) How do I go about getting her to drop the weight. I went and purchased her these pellets

Should I start lunging her now or wait till she drops some weight first so I am not straining her joints? She was getting around 700 grams of pellets and a mixed grass hay.

This is her:

And this is here when she is not fat....

I would not start lunging right away. I would start with long walks, some muzzle time when out on pasture and add something like remission or quiessence to her diet maybe? This is what I started doing with my little gelding that when I started looked much like your girl in shape. He is starting to lose now and I feed Enrich 32, quiessence, plain grass hay and I do hand walking,.

take care and sorry you didn't get a foal for all the waiting. Your mare is lovely.
