I was just wondering how accutate this test is? Has anyone had it performed and it was wrong? (i.e. mare was not pregnant and it showed a high progesterone level OR mare is bred and it shows a very low progesterone level?)

Thanks in advance for any helpful info! Pam

Ultrasounding is the best way IMO, but if you are going to do a blood test do the ESTRONE SULFATE test NOT the progesterone test...........Estrone Sulfate is much more reliable. Mare has to be over 60 days in foal to test.

We have done the progesterone test twice. We had the mare ultrasounded first both times, the first time we could not find any sign that she was pg, and the progesterone test confirmed it.

This last time we ultra sounded first again, and it was inconclusive. She had a pg look to her uterus, but they could not find the baby. The vet, who is a repro specialist and works for the big thoroughbred farms around here, decided to do the progest. test, to be sure she was NOT pg. It came back she was, and she has been ultrasounded since then and confirmed in foal that way too.

I don't know how reliable it is, but both vets, who are both very experienced, suggested the progesterone, and haven't mentioned the other tests that are out there. It has been right so far for me, but I'm sure someone on here will have more info on the accuracy of it.

We had my mini blood tested for her progesterone level...It came back elevated so it didn't work for us. But a few weeks later we figured out how to do an ultra sound(internal) using a balling-gun but we were able to find the foal on an externa ultra sound.
