A friend has a 2 month old colt that is not nursing, mom is dripping milk, colt is acting normal. Colt did have a choke episode about a month ago, but has been fine since. He is not breathing heavy, is drinking water and eating. He does nurse a little but not enough to make moms bag go down. Has anyone experienced anything like that??

Thanks

Heidi

Mare and foal are on pasture, so she could of eaten anything. She does have a call into her vet, he has not gotten back with her yet.

I would for sure milk the mare and bring the bag down. Sometimes its a vicious circle because if the bag gets too big and tight the foal cant nurse from it

if the pasture isn't too big it might be a good idea to walk the pasture, and look for something the mare may have eaten that could be harmful to her. However if he's eating, and drinking he should be fine untill your vet can get to you, but the problem , I think, is more likely to be the mare then the foal if he was fine after the coke episode.
