To anyone looking to buy minis today

In response to "adopting is free", actually it isn't. Usually there is an adoption fee of at LEAST $300-$500 to adopt from a rescue agency. I "bought" my mini for $300, but considered her a rescue case and knew it would cost quite a bit of money to get her healthy and up to date on shots etc...

    round bale holders??

I have a homemade version of this and I LOVE it. I used to use a regular metal round bale holder and the horses still made a mess. With this they waste almost NOTHING and the hay stays dry. I do cut off the strings. http://www.capitolsheds.com/horse-hfeeder6x10-naturalgrnmtl.html#thumb

    Broodmare Advice

Ditto on adding Omolene 300. You could also add ground flax seed prepared especially for horses (Nutra-Flax from Horsetech); it is stabilized with calcium so would be a good supplementary source for that as well as healthy fat. If she typically drops weight I'm not sure why you are worried...

Zimectrin Gold no more for me

I have used it for years as part of a rotational program without any problems, but I heard about this problem last year as well and have switched to Equimax as a precaution. Figure if there is a product that does the same thing without any reported cases of problems why not switch?

    Oxytocin

I too would question why Oxytocin. Regumate is what is usually used to regulate cycles (and it would be more than one dose); but perhaps your vet has another reason for giving the Oxy? But yes, most of the time mini's get the same dose of drugs and vaccines as the big horses.

Conformation terms - Can someone explain

Circles you didn't fool me, I had those pegged as quarter horse butts and immediately thought "reiner", but then, that's my thing too. Even my arabian has a nice round quarter horse butt lol!

    Grain Question!

Also, instead of adding oil, try ground flax seed. Will add healthy fat, Omega 3 and 6 and lots of other good stuff! I've seen great results from adding just a little flax to a hard keeper's diet.

    Lost foal

I don't think she was saying that Patches showed no interest, but that one of the other mares showed no interest even though all the others did. I don't think you can tell whether the one who wasn't interested in the dead foal will be a good mother or not from that, especially if she is a young...

    Is my foal a dwarf?

Agree 100% with Jill. Of course it matters, if she turns out to be a dwarf you would have to take a good long look at the breeding that produced her, to find out where it came from so as not to repeat it. You'd also want to make sure she is never bred as well. Of course it won't change...

    Hoof abcess?

I have had horses with abscesses take awhile to pop. I'd keep soaking, and give bute or banamine for pain and swelling. If it's an abscess you want him to keep moving around, which will help it to burst, so relieving some of his discomfort is helpful. And yes, your farrier can trim him up and...

what to do for yearlings kicking?

It was feeding time in her "new" territory. She's trying to be the boss of you. Make her face you before you enter her stall and keep facing you the whole time you're moving around in there. Don't let her eat unless she's giving you two respectful eyes with her ears forward. Drive her butt...

Advice on Minis Housed in Pastures that Contain Dense Woods

My horses cleared out all the brush in the woods, you don't need goats for that. Now they have paths all through the woods and everyone has their favorite shade/scratching tree. Get some guineas and/or chickens to free range out there, they'll put a hurtin' on the ticks for you.
