I have a mare that is supposed to be in foal for June/July of this year. I have gone through my yes's and no's if she is bred or not and will end up taking her in for an ultrasound to determine for sure if she is bred or not. She is sometimes lopsided, sometimes seems to have a different belly shape, and sometimes she just looks like there is no way there is a foal anywhere in there. I know all mares carry different. So lets see pictures of your mares that surprise us with a foal!

How small is your mare? Do you really need to know if she is preggers or not - can you possibly just wait and see as she gets closer to her foaling 'time', I would be a bit worried about having a very small mare ultrasounded.

Good luck whatever you decide.

Here's my 32" solid bay mare just the other day

YES she's in foal, had I not felt/seen the foal kick the heck out of my hand I would not think she's in foal. And she's a well seasoned broodmare, has had several foals, but this year she is TINY. Her 330 due date is June 18th, but I do not think she'll go that long!

Why don't you buy a WeeFoal test? It'd be cheaper and quicker than having a vet out to ultrasound, and you'd still know for sure..

The mare herself is 32" so not tiny in size, just tiny belly wise. I've had her for about a year now and had her bred last year so I have no idea how she normally carries. She was ultrasounded and cultured last year by a reproduction specialist before being sent off to an outside stallion. She just changes so much and is not the usual "wide load" that you usually see. Some days I look at her and go nope, no way! Then other days I look at her and go ok, yup, I see a baby belly. I may end up doing WeeFoal test, I just wasn't sure if you could do it that late in the pregnancy. She would be due, June or July depending on if she took on the first breeding or second.

I will see if I can post a few pictures I took with my cell tonight (which was one of the times I think, yup, she's bred just tiny!)

But yet here are pictures from two nights before. And she is showing like crazy to my stallion (who of course I will not let him breed her) which also throws me for a bit of a loop. I know some mares will show all the time, some mares just have such hormone changes during pregnancy that they will, but it did surprise me when she did. And being a mare I have never foaled out before means there are so many different things to learn about her process!

Thank you so much Lucky-C for the pictures! Your mare sure reinforces that they don't show concept! I can't wait to see your foals out of Doc and Royal! I am a fan of Doc!

I was going to email you and see if Fancy had foaled yet then saw the post. I had a mare that was showing to Fiesta and she foaled a month later so I think it was her hormones. I know the waiting is probably got you on pins and needles. Can you wee-foal her? How is Stormy doing?

Anna,

I'm curious about this statement. What, in your opinion, means "too small to ultrasound?" What are the concerns? And are you referring to a traditional internal ultrasound?

Thanks!

Precious is 29". Bought her in foal for a April-May foal.

Really looked big enough to me.......pic was taken in March.

However now its May 7. So guess shes not in foal to that stallion.

She never had much of a bag. I still watched her on cam for weeks.

She came in heat for 3 days in August. I bred her to my stallion.

So she must be holding out till the firt part of July.

Oh yes, I am on pins and needles! She has just left me guessing so much that when she was showing heat it really threw me off. Sometimes it's just really hard to think that there is room for a foal in there! I'm really hoping that she is bred and that it is just her hormones being thrown off and not true heat as I am really anticipating this foal. I will have to look up and see if I can do a Weefoal test on her this late in the game. If she took on the first breeding she will be about 300 days and if it was on the second she would be about 280 days.

Stormy is doing great! She is such a sweetie and a devil all at the same time! What a personality she has! I put some new pictures of her on FB if you hadn't seen them. She got her head and neck clipped too so she could fit in with the other girls. She is always butting in for pets and you can walk her with or without a halter and lead rope. I guess with being an orphan she sometimes forgets she is a horse. But we all love her to pieces all the time whether she is good or bad! Fancy is also come so far. I can catch her now when she is loose without treats or anything! She is great!

I did not know enough on Fancys foaling history.I let her run with Fiesta during those months before I sold her. I think the reason she was not in foal with him was Poppy is starting to shoot blanks as several mares bred to him ended up open. Soooo he is retired to eating grass. He has done his job and deserves it. Let me now how it goes with Fancy
