A Rider’s Bucket List

By HI Staff

The movie The Bucket List follows two terminally ill men (played by Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman) who embark on a journey with a wish list of things to do before they “kick the bucket.” Here’s our equestrian version of a bucket list—25 ultimate things to experience in a lifetime as a horse lover. What’s on your list?

1 Gallop on the beach. No

2 Win a blue ribbon, even if it’s for the egg and spoon race! Yes

3 Enjoy an evening of equestrian theater, from major touring productions such as Cavalia to local performance troupes. Yes

4 Try your hand at cattle work. Find out what it means when they say a horse is “cowy.” No

5 Jump! From crossrails to cross-country obstacles, experience the thrill of soaring over fences. Yes (the BIG ones ;)

6 Fall off and get right back on again. Conquering fear is empowering. Yes

7 See the majestic white Lipizzan stallions at the Spanish Riding School in Vienna. No

8 Come to a sliding stop on a well-trained reining horse. No

9 Take a lesson with your equestrian idol, _________ (you fill in the blank.) Yes. I was fortunate to be coached and have my horses boarded full-time with my idol

10 Nurse a horse through a crisis and back to full health. Yes

11 Experience the smooth ride of a gaited horse. No

12 Watch the horses come through the Head of the Lake on cross-country day at the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event. No

13 Have the courage to do the right thing for your horse, even when it’s not easy. Yes (although, there was a time I didn't...)

14 Attend the Kentucky Derby dressed to the nines—including hat! No

15 Tackle a trail accessible only by horseback and enjoy the view. Yes

16 Take your dream vacation on horseback. No

17 Master the sitting trot. Yes

18 Ride a fine-tuned horse in your discipline of choice, be it dressage schoolmaster or barrel champ. Yes (I got to ride several Grand Prix jumpers and a couple of Grand Prix/Olympic Dressage horses...Have you ever felt a Grand Prix Dressage horse move under you? Stellar

)

19 Watch polo. Even better, try your hand at it! Yes

20 Feed, muck, groom, ride. Repeat daily. My life, as a teen...and, thankkfully, now.

21 Wake up to a whinny every morning. Yes. Heaven

22 Fly down the track on a Thoroughbred. No

23 Meet one of your favorite famous horses in person. Yes (Big Ben, Kahlua, Rio Grande etc.)

24 Ride bareback, bridleless ... or both! Yes (although I won't soon again...I have a small, boney butt...poor horse)

25 Share a bond with your horse that’s deeper than words. One of the greatest gifts in the universe....

What a great list!

But I have to admit, this one got to me:

"25 Share a bond with your horse that’s deeper than words. One of the greatest gifts in the universe...."

I've been blessed with what I think is a once in a lifetime relationship. He was a QH my mom bought when I was 6 and he was 12. We were inseperable and he taught me everything I know about riding. That horse was more "human" than any other animal I have ever known. I loved him with all my heart and I haven't found that relationship with another animal since. He was a "Leo" bred horse - and born in 1968, so the original Leo was his grandsire on top. He was also called Leo and I lost him when I was 22 and he was 28. I still miss him, and that truly is one of the most special relationships a person can ever have. When you know and trust an animal so completely - it truly is beyond words.
